I bought this product to replace the non-functioning electric element in my 30 year old Brinkmann Smoke'nGrill cooker/smoker. Conceptually, this element should have made low temp smoking much easier due to having the ability to manually adjust the temperature, which was not possible with the original Brinkmann element. The literature that comes with this new element states that it has an operating temperature range of 50°F-450°F. The first time I used it I set the dial to "low" just to kick things off at the beginning of a smoked jalapenos session. I added a foil pouch of water soaked hickory chips. Unfortunately, I also had 2 slightly bigger chunks of soaked hardwood sitting on the lava rocks as well. Minutes after I put the lid on and my back was turned, all of the pre-soaked wood was in flames and the paint started bubbling and flaking off the smoker. Apparently, "low" means, "Get ready for 600 degrees!!!" Part of the runaway temperature was due to the larger hickory chunks igniting. However, after I put out the flames and had the presence of mind to pull out my infrared thermometer, I found that the element was putting out temps of 550-700°F when the dial was on the "low" setting. I figured out that there is a little space on the dial between "off" and "low." That is the area of the dial I have to do all my business at. Anything higher... I'm risking a lot of wasted Chipotle peppers... and property damage of course. I think I can get away with using this thing as long as I'm extremely cautious, ever-present, and never set the dial all the way up to "low." I expect the element to burn itself up and fail fairly quickly for obvious reasons. I will get some use out of it. Hopefully, I will get 1 or 2 more seasons out of it before I'm forced to make another purchase. Just don't expect to have fine control over the temperature output on this thing. I had to do a little cutting on the body of my smoker in order to get a perfect fit. I knew this going in though, based on the comments. I also installed a grill thermometer in the lid of my smoker at the same time. It does help catch temperature runaways and gives you something to look at while trying to figure out how to cope with this maddening, almost unsettable, potentially hazardous element.

Was easy to install, appears to be better than the original. Only took about 5 minutes to install.

As some other reviews have mentioned, this element would heat up. It did not get to 170 degrees in my smoker after 2 hours of heating. The wood chips, placed in foil, and put over the element did not smoke. It just dried them out. I had to cut a rectangular opening in order to retrofit this element for my Brinkman Gourmet smoker. Now I have a opening in my smoker I don't need. Most of my smoker recipes require smoker temperatures of 210 to 250 degrees. Therefore useless.
