This Joyagrill "Spiral Cold Smoke Generator" is not as advertised or depicted. First, it's not 8". It's 7¼" across, at the widest point of the useable area (see photo). The only way this measures 8" is if the "handles" are included. The product box isn't even 8" on its longest edges. The workmanship is second-quality, at best, and the configuration is a mirror image of what's shown in most of the photos on the product page. This would, of course, have no bearing on the function but it's not an accurate representation of what you get. The "platform" for the candle they expect you to use to ignite the smoking medium is much smaller than shown, and pushed much further back (see photo), leaving much less room for a candle (or other starter), height-wise, than shown. Speaking of candles, there is no way I'm burning a candle in my grill or smoker.Per the product page ad copy and the instruction sheet that comes with the unit, the expected fuel is wood "dust", which would not be retained by the mesh. I have no intention of dealing with wood dust. I've been grilling and smoking for decades and have never used or even been advised to use "dust". This thing is nothing but a huge mess waiting to happen. No thanks! As for performance, using the pellets I normally use in my smoke tubes, the neighboring turn of the coil catches when you light the ignition point, sabotaging the "long smoke time" intention.I wouldn't recommend this to anyone.

This works for hours, smoking cheese in my grill. I used bbq pellets and the cheese came out tasting great. Does not heat up the area significantly which is a major plus when smoking cheese. It outputs a good, solid amount of smoke and seems to be made out of durable materials. It was easy to setup and light!

Getting ready to cold smoke some cheese and wanted to give the Joyagrill spiral smoke generator a try. I haven't actually smoked my cheese yet, but I did give the spiral generator a test run. The generator is a compact design that should fit in a loaded smoker or grill. Made of stainless steel the welds seem to be solid. The mesh is small allowing the pellets or dust to burn but will keep the ash from falling through.I have a pellet smoker, so I loaded the generator up with some of the wood pellets I always use. I only filled the generator halfway. You need to make sure the pellets are tightly packed. I found where my wife keeps her tea candles, and I was ready. Setup on a stone paver, I let the candle burn for the 15 minutes and the pellets did start smoking. The smoke being produced I believe will fill the closed smoker or grill without heating the chamber. Exactly what I wanted to do. The test I ran the smoke was generated for about 2 hours. I'll order some dust and will test with that as well.Overall, I believe it will do the job it was intended for. The only thing I can consider as a downside is using a tea candle which I most likely will not do again. My propane torch is standing by.

This tray may work for other fuels, but I wanted to see if it would work with wood pellets like the ones I use in my grill. I was especially interested in it because its spiral shape would take up less grill space than my smoker tubes. My experiments with pellets have failed. Not only is the lane that is supposed to produce smoke smaller than in a tube (meaning less smoke per inch burned), but it doesn't seem to generate enough heat to stay lit. I have not gotten it to make it around the outer spiral without regular boosts from a torch.I can't, however, rate this below average since it may perform well with wood chips, shavings, or dust. I just can not recommend it for smoking with pellets.

It worked well with pellets, but I really had to blast them to get them burning. The burn also moved across the coil, not in a circle as desired. I used it for smoking cheese, and the cheese did turn out tasty, so I can't fault it too hard. I would overall recommend.
