Creeping red fescue is a perennial grass, which survives in marginal conditions.
Low irrigation
During the dry spell, these grasses go dormant and wait for their turns.
Once it rains, they will catch the rain and retain it with their deep root systems.
Low mow-frequency
Slow growing thus no need to mow often, it is suggested to mow red fescues twice a year or leave them unmowed.
Problems:
1. Slow to germinate, take up to 30 days to come out.
2. Low foot-traffic tolerance.

Over the past few years, we have converted what used to be a dry and barren piece of lawn into a flourishing garden filled with native plants. Now milkweeds, elderberries, and swamp roses have all found their home here. This small garden has a resonating impact on wildlife. In this 100 square feet garden, we have welcomed monarch butterflies, goldfinches (songbirds), sandpipers (water-birds), and countless native bees.
Being able to see biodiversity being restored in a few years was deeply inspiring and we hope many others may also be able to experience this.
