Featuring an edge-to-edge 1/8” grid plus ruler markings along all edges, the R418G adapts to either left or right hand users. Use the 30, 45 and 60 degree angle markings to cut accurate triangles, diamonds and hexagons. Omnigrid heavy-duty acrylic rulers have patented double sight lines, making the grid lines easy to see on light and dark fabrics. Made in the USA.

A necessary item for drafting your fashion designs or during the cutting phase. Use with proper self-healing cutting mat & rotary blade. Mat should also be in inches also (most of these things still are).I had two 18” by 3” Omnigrid rulers because I mislay things and I can always find one of them…but something heavy fell in my sewing room and cracked one of them in half (I might rescue it later with the scrollsaw and turn it into a 12 by 3” ruler.). Anyway, they are a hard plastic but cannot withstand the weight of a short IKEA multidrawer-filing-type cabinet (Don’t ask, I was searching behind it.). This item was to be a replacement. As I was ordering, I did not realize that this was actually 18” by 4”…not an issue actually…better for cutting wider strips.I like that is is clear, so you can see where your fabric is and also line up the ruler with the cutting mat. The ruler is thick, so there is less chance of your rotary cutter running up on top of the ruler and becoming nicked or blunt as occasionally happens with a metal ruler. The markings are clear which is a plus with my eyesight. There are lines at one area of the ruler that are at 60, 45 and 30 degrees from both straight edges. I frequently use the 45 degree one for making bias tape/strips for facing armholes, necklines and piping for decorative accents on pockets or… I often use this in place of a carpenter’s square when drafting patterns. The angled lines are useful also if adding flare to side seams or slashing and pivoting to incorporate more pleats and flare into a pattern piece on maybe a skirt panel that is sewn to a yoke.It is, however, long enough that if you start cutting at one end, moving your weight down the ruler to match where you are cutting, it can shift/swing giving one a variable width strip which can make construction more difficult. I usually place one of the four old-fashioned, pre-electrical, very heavy irons I have (which you can no longer buy cheaply now since vintage stuff got fashionable) on the far end to stabilize the ruler. You might, on some cuts, need to get someone to hold the other end which I have done in a school setting to get thick ribbing cut. A stable solid sealing container, with water, which weighs a lot, would be the best bet for stabilizing the other end to prevent it shifting if working alone (one of those locks-four-sides…).I really like the Omnigrid rulers. Have a very small square one for small jobs as well as a 36” by 4” for larger jobs that has a clip-on alignment item. Very happy with the brand.I wish it hadn’t taken so blooming long for Amazon get off their duffs and ship it (Took two chats to get some action.) since the other two parts of the order arrived really quickly. Amazon also dangerously packed the item in a thin bubble/paper mailing bag. Lucky nothing heavy fell on it during shipping, given my experience that prompted ordering this.

I had a hard time seeing the lines on lighter fabrics and wish I would have gotten a ruler with black lines. Looks like I have more shopping to do.
