I purchased this motor for an astronomy project: an equatorial platform which needs to slowly pan the sky as the earth turns. The 99:1 gear ratio was interesting to me due to the slow pace needed for this application, which is about 15 degrees of rotation per hour. The stepper motor provides plenty of muscle, especially with the 99:1 gearing. I just used a ready-made variable speed controller/driver and it was fairly easy to set the turn rate. In my experience the minimum voltage is 9 volts, which is what I'm using to keep the watts low. Current varies depending on the speed, but for very slow speeds the current required can be 1.2 to 1.3 amps. However the current is much less when the motor is running at a faster speed. With about 9 watts of power going into it the motor it gets quite warm, so I attached a couple of heat sinks to the outside of the motor. So far there are been no issues with the motor and I'm quite pleased with how it operates.
