Connectors loose. Opened up and the windings were a mess. I rewound it with good wire.

I got the 1:1 for a 10 meter dipole and the SWR is 4:1 or better everywhere, I can’t find a dip at all.Removed the balun and now it dips down to 1.2:1

Like most antennae an amateur radio operator can buy, the materials you use make a huge difference in how well you can get your signal out. Manufactured antennae are great, but there's nothing like "rolling your own", and taking pride in seeing just how well it works. This balun/unun/connection is no different. I have my long wire trimmed for use the 10m band (28MHz), using a Yaesu FT-301S on a Mighty Fine Junque 971 portable tuner. Amazingly, I was able to get the SWR all the way down to around 1.5:1. It seems to be working as well as can be expected...then again, I'm only running about 10 watts out.A few tips when using this connector:1. Seal the box itself. While it may not collect water right away, it's far from weather resistant. A dab of silicone sealer will help keep water out.2. CHECK ALL THE CONNECTIONS IN THE BOX BEFORE PUTTING ANY POWER THROUGH THIS. I lucked out with mine, and noticed all the connections were well soldered. A few dabs of hot glue inside had come loose, but those weren't too much of a concern. Another dab of silicone sealer took care of those loose ends. Also, tighten all the nuts and bolts, and SO-239 connectors. They do tend to come loose.3. Altitude is your friend. My long wire is about 20 feet up (between my chimney and my pear tree in my back yard). I would have liked it to be higher, but I can make do.I've yet to make any meaningful long-distance contacts, as 10m isn't very active now. May just have to switch over to 6m, since I've read that band's becoming quite busy. I'll likely leave the long wire as it is, or maybe get another one of these connectors, and cut a 6m long wire antenna, then see if I can work my magic again to get the SWR down.

The toroid inside the case had three turns on one hemisphere and one on the other. I discarded the wires, wound my own for 1:1 - lots of instructions on the web - and waterproofed the box. Works OK.

I am using it with a doublet fed with 300 ohm ladder line and works perfectly. I am running 10 watts so I have no idea if it will handle 100 watts. Based on its tiny size, I would be hesitant to pump 100 watts through it as I thinks it would over heat. It is very well made and its size makes it perfect for QRP portable ops. WA6MOW
