I have used these for years--they do a much quicker and overall better job than belt sanders and changing grit pads is a breeze. There is, however, one serious glitch. In heavy use, the pad locks permanently to the spindle. Meaning that no available leverage or torque can get the damned thing off when you need to replace it. I have tried using anti-seize grease, I have tried loosening immediately after each use, I have tried modifying an open-end wrench to supplement just pulling on the outside of the disc with the spindle locked--basically nothing prevents the problem from recurring. Since the pads are so expensive, one uses them as long as possible. But sooner or later, the pad must be replaced (try VERY hard to avoid "catching" the edge of the pad on the edge of hardwood!). At that point, frustration ensues. It makes an expensive sander unusable after one or two pad changes. This alone has made me switch from Makita to Nieko--they have the same problems, but the Nieko costs 1/3 the Makita and works nearly as well.

I purchased this Hookit Disc Pad in addition to my Kawasaki variable speed buffer, as I wanted a quick and easy way to change out from using it as a buffer to going to a sander, polisher, etc. The price is somewhat high, but it is 3M and as always appears to be very well made. It uses standard velcro style backed pads (sandpaper, polishing pads, etc) and makes the changeover very quick. It also sits a bit higher than the standard pad on my buffer, which gives some extra clearance while going over the car or boat. It just helps to avoid those quick little bounces off the finish to really mess up your day! LOL. This is fairly universal from my understanding, so it should work with almost any buffer or sander that is not an random orbital unit.
