I have a single diamond stone that has two grits. I use on a regular basis to sharpen knifes, scissors, and carbide tips for the lathe. Although the diamond stone does a good job, it’s only two grits (stone is reversable). For some applications, this is okay, but I’d like to have a bigger variety of grits to achieve a better edge. This diamond stone set was the answer. You get six different diamond stones, ranging from 400 up-to 2000 grit. With six stones, it of course takes a little longer; however, I can put a finer edge on what I’m sharpening. I will have a cup or container of things that need to be sharpened and wait until I have enough to make it worthwhile to perform the job. I’ll then take the stones and put a couple drops of honing fluid on them and smooth the fluid over the stone. Run the blade over the stone to get an edge. For carbide turning bits, I move them in a circle a few times, clockwise then counter-clockwise. These stones work perfectly for my use case.

I have a set of whetstones that I normally use to sharpen my chisels and planer blades. They work well, but are a bit of a hassle as I have to keep them in water and deal with the mess. I've heard a lot of hype about diamond stones and was put off by the costs. However, they have really come down recently, so I wanted to give them a try.So far I've been very impressed with how well they work. They were all flat and true out of the box. The grit seemed to adhere to the plates very well. The rubber backing holds well to the surface of a nice flat hardwood board I set it on even once a little water got around it. The grit densities are well spaced to provide a nice gradation for honing the blades to a fine edge. I did find them a little bit small when using my honing guide for the planer blades, but the chisels had less of an issue.Overall, these are an excellent value for someone that needs to get their tools sharps, but doesn't have the budget for an expensive solution. They work great and seem like they'll last for a while.
