I use variable ND filters often. At their darker settings, they can have vignetting or other weird effects at the edges due to the crossed polar lenses used in the variable ND. Using an over-sized ND and stepping down minimizes that. This fit both the filter and the lens well.

I'm using this to retain a APO Rodagon 180mm enlarging lens to a flat Beseler lens board that has a 58mm threaded mount.Works as well as the $75 retaining ring. Possibly even better since it has a wider (larger) surface area in contact with the board. Although I did have to grind it a bit on all four sides to allow it to freely mount into the enlarger lens stage.

For a long time, I resisted getting a step-up ring with such a large span, 58-82mm. I was afraid it would be unwieldy and would make the lenses I intended it for look like space ships. But it has turned out to be very practical and easy to use. I do a lot of outdoor portraiture augmented by strobe. So, neutral density filters are a must. This ring allows me to use for still photos the same ND filters I use on cine lenses. I wouldn't do street photography with such a large flat-top on the end of the lens. It would catch people's attention. But for outdoor portraits, it's great.
