Great tunes from one of the late, great pioneers of British blues so I highly recommend it.

It's hard to follow up Clapton, but they did it well. Great performances. Recording is decent. The White vinyl is alright... Not my thing, but maybe it's yours. Pressing was relatively flat and noiseless. Comes with audiophile sleeve. A decent repress. If you like the "Beano" album, make no mistake, you'll liked this as well. Arguably the two best Blues Breakers albums.

A solid slab of English Blues and a very generous package (double the original running time with great singles, a couple of eps and some live material from that line-up). Half of the soon to be running Fleetwood Mac is here (Green & McVie) but the real star is Mayall. He provides most of the material, sings well enough and plays a mean harmonica. (His guitar playing is simply wimpy beside Green's blistering solos and chopping rhythms.) Although BLUESBREAKERS WITH ERIC CLAPTON is the more lauded release, A HARD ROAD is a master class in white-boy blues: how to write it, how to deliver it and, most importantly, how to feel it. Recommended.

Several weeks ago I saw John Mayall perform at a small club in Victoria, B.C. It was a great show; the man is 78 years old and he can still outperform musicians less than a third of his age.During the show, Mayall played some of his 1960s material that I haven't listened to for years. It's great stuff so, over the last few weeks, I've been revisiting and rediscovering many of these classic 1960s British blues albums. It's easy to forget what a masterful player John Mayall was, and still is. This 1967 album was the only Mayall studio album to feature Peter Green on guitar. Green replaced Eric Clapton after Clapton left John Mayall's band to form Cream with Ginger Baker and Jack Bruce.Peter Green is often overlooked today. During the early 1970s he was diagnosed with schizophrenia and, due to his mental illness, he largely disappeared from the music scene. But listen to his playing on this album, especially on instumental tracks like The Stumble and The Super-Natural, and it's readily apparent why John Mayall considered him capable of filling Eric Clapton's spot as the Bluesbreakers' lead guitarist in 1967.After this album was released Peter Green left John Mayall's band and, a few years later, formed Fleetwood Mac with John Mayall's bass player John McVie and former Mayall drummer Mick Fleetwood. For more of Peter Green's playing, you might want to check out some early Fleetwood Mac albums like Then Play On. If you're not familiar with early Fleetwood Mac you may not realize that Santana's Black Magic Woman was not an original Santana composition; Santana covered a song written by Peter Green for the early incarnation of Fleetwood Mac. You may want to check out the Fleetwood Mac original.John Mayall's 1960s bands were incubators of talent. Among the many alumni of Mayall's band were Eric Clapton, Peter Green, Mick Taylor (later of the Rolling Stones), John McVie, Mick Fleetwood (of Fleetwood Mac) and many others. It's worthwhile to give these 1960s Mayall albums a listen or a re-listen. For those of you who haven't heard Mayall's 1960s material, you should check it out. This album is one of Mayall's best 1960s albums and this reissue has some bonus tracks that are worth having. If you're a blues fan, this album is certainly worth a listen.
