OK they are iron but not really filings. More like sawdust. And when used it is a little greasy.

I bought these filings along with several magnets, to demonstrate lines of force for my daughter's class. Good demo. I suggest putting the magnet underneath a sheet of glass / plastic and placing filings on top. Otherwise you've got a problem cleaning the filings off the magnet.Down one start, because the filings themselves are, for lack of a better word, "greasy". Greasy residue left on glass and fingers, messy for kids. Experimenting to see if filings can be cleaned.

Like everyone else says, you can't really mess up iron filings. Was looking everywhere for them, and these were perfect. I was using them for an art piece involving magnets and it worked out great. The price is alright, but it's not like I had many other options.I will say, however, that the bottle itself wasn't very good at keeping the iron filings in.As soon as I took off the cap, the filings that got out onto the twisty part made a mess on my table.
