Product Description

Drehgriffel Nr. 2 – the mechanical pencil.

Drehgriffel Nr. 2

With a fine sense of creativity.

The graphite colouring of the lacquered tip, the twist mechanism and the logo lettering emphasise the function and character of the Drehgriffel Nr. 2. Made of aluminium and brass, it ensures a perfect equilibrium and a particularly pleasant feel whenever it touches the paper. The front tip (fine-tip) is milled from polished steel and forms a harmonious transition to the 0.7 mm thin graphite refill.

Drehgriffel Nr. 2

The Drehgriffel Nr. 2 wins the coveted Red Dot Design Award 2022

The pencil with a twist mechanism is an unmistakable and distinctive writing instrument that stands out from the crowd, and not just because of its great quality and functionality. In 2020, Drehgriffel Nr. 1 – which is inspired by the 1920s and features a hexagonal barrel with a colour-contrasting tapered tip and twist button – was also awarded the Red Dot. Following the successful introduction of the Drehgriffel Nr. 1 series of writing instruments, LEUCHTTURM1917 has expanded the range this year with the Drehgriffel Nr. 2 and immediately received another Red Dot Design Award.

Drehgriffel Nr. 2

Drehgriffel Nr. 2 – now also available as a pencil with twist mechanism.

Made of aluminium, the Drehgriffel Nr. 2 pencil is comfortable to hold and is ideal for writing or other creative uses, such as drawing or sketching. Its lacquered brass tip provides a balanced weight for maximum comfort when writing. In contrast to the Drehgriffel Nr. 1, the fine tip is made of steel, creating a harmonious transition to the 0.7-mm graphite lead. The graphite colour of the distinctive tip and twist button highlights the function and character of Nr. 2.

Drehgriffel Nr. 2

New and yet a classic: The Drehgriffel Nr. 2

Dreh – Griffel: a wordmark and play on words. The design of the ‘Drehgriffel’ wordmark stems from ‘Sütterlin’, a style of lettering developed in Germany during the 1920s to teach handwriting. The deliberate disparity between the wordmark’s old German style creates a playful contrast to the modern design. The German compound word Drehgriffel, which is made up of the two parts Dreh (to twist or turn in reference to the innovative twist mechanism) and Griffel (a nod to th oldest writing utensil in the world from the Greek grapheion), clearly reflects the deep roots of the traditional German company LEUCHTTURM1917. It is no certainly no coincidence that the birth of the Drehgriffel and the foundation of Leuchtturm Album Publishing House both date back to the 1920s.

Drehgriffel Nr. 2

Drehgriffel Nr. 2 | Pencil

The writing and drawing utensil’s mechanism is made in Germany – by pressing the twist button, the gripper at the tip opens and the lead is pushed out. When the twist button is released, the gripper closes again and holds the lead in place. Inside the Drehgriffel Nr. 2, a quiver holds several leads and pushes the next one down when the current lead is used up.

Drehgriffel Nr. 1 | with gel refill

Drehgriffel Nr. 1 | with gel refill

Japan is a country which is well-known for its writing culture. Shodō is a Japanese word which is often translated as ‘the way of artistic handwriting’ or beautiful writing and describes the very moment in which a thought flows through the hand and becomes visible on paper.

Our gel pen refill was developed in Japan, in order to reproduce in everyday life and as accurately as possible the fineness of ink strokes that were traditionally created with a brush. It makes the multiple award-winning Drehgriffel Nr. 1 pen from LEUCHTTURM1917 a premium instrument for writing and drawing.

Drehgriffel Nr. 1 | Ballpoint pen

Drehgriffel Nr. 1 | Ballpoint pen

Inspired by the original 1920 design. The Drehgriffel Nr. 1 makes a striking statement, with its hexagonal silhouette. Both the narrowly tapered tip and the twist mechanism come in a colour that contrasts with the body.

this is a beautiful, well made pencil. I love the weightiness of the pen. I highly recommend it! I have been using tul (office depot brand) for the last few years, but I do not see myself going back!

Great pencil (yes it is on the more expensive side, but it is well made, easy to hold and use, and the twist mechanism works well). I did not see this offered in a .5mm lead size which I prefer. I only could find it offered in the .7mm size. Hopefully, therefore, this might help others if you prefer another lead size. I went ahead and ordered it, and fortunately, upon receipt and opening it up, the internal pencil mechanism itself is just a Schmidt DSM 2006. Therefore it was simply a matter of ordering one of those separately (example:https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01LXAEYJN?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details) in a .5mm lead size and unscrewing the .7mm insert and replacing it with the .5mm insert. As others have pointed out, this does not come with a built-in eraser. Overall it is a very nice mechanical pencil, and when paired with the corresponding ballpoint pen, it makes a nice overall set.
