Temp probe broke after 4 mos of ownership and trying to find a replacement has proved difficult. Unit is nice but the support is atrocious....

Although it has a high RPM and can reach temperatures of up to 490 degrees Fahrenheit, this device requires a manual to operate the hotplate. In the future, I would recommend investing an additional $50 to purchase a hotplate that doesn't prioritize safety features.

I don't use hotplates every day, but I did want a quality unit versus the el cheapo specials that you could probably buy two or three for the price of this 4E. However, as a bargain hunter who values build quality over price, this one is worth it. It's not the quickest to get up to heat but does so every time I ask it (a few times a month), the magnetic stirrer hasn't suffered from asking it to do more that is required for some very viscous tasks, and it works every time I need it to. I wouldn't hesitate to upgrade to the digital read-out version if you're on the fence, but if you don't mind a thermo rod sticking out of your beakers, this is a nice unit.

after carefully reading instructions and after some experimentation I was able to get this unit to work The instructions included with item are written poorly. There are no instructions on how to adjust high low setting. There is also a small screwdriver included with noinstructions as to what it is for. After some looking and guessing I was able to turn up the adjustment next to the on off switch to high (high low adjustment) and the stirrer plate reaches and holds boiling point of up to 600cc of H20. It also helps to cover container that you are working with. The first unit I ordered did not work as the digital circuits appeared to be scrambled.

The unit uses a thermocouple probe to control the temperature and displays the temperature on a screen. Motor control is also easy to use. This is a much nicer unit that the one I had previously.

The magnetic stir never worked and after a couple uses the element cracked on the surface. It still heats up and that is about it.

So far, so good. Thought it came with the screw in stand bar to hold the thermometer. Will look further. My first run of RSO went well. Boiled off the alcohol without a problem and reached 106-110°C without a problem.Keep an eye on your temps. Could have sworn the plate kept flash heating after it reached the set temp. Could have been due to evaporation.

For my usage, this is a fantastic stirring/heating device. I have been using it daily for several months, for food-related mixtures that require constant stirring over a lengthy period of time at specific temperatures. This device solved several issues for me. I use the temperature probe + stand attachment, with a 2000mL heavy-duty Pyrex beaker, which fits perfectly. I like the cross-bar stirrer bars the best. As someone who is/was new to these types of devices, there was a little bit of an initial learning and experimentation process, which was expected (and fun!). The 4E company is very friendly and responsive with answering questions and providing help. Overall, this device and company have assisted me greatly and I would buy another one.
