Great little tester, so far the has worked fairly well for my Cat5/6 testing and validating a few Fibre cables. It's nice and compact and it's great when I have to walk around the data center and I can just slip it in my pocket instead of lugging around my bag with a bunch of tools. The interface is easy to navigate and the backlit display is also nice. it's reasonably priced overall and it's something I will likely include in my quick grabs for diagnosing easy things.

I ordered this to have on hand to diagnose future fiber Internet service outages (broken fiber or something else?). This inexpensive instrument measured the 1310 nm signal within 1 dBm of the installer's much more expensive instrument, so for the purposes of determining whether light is present and strong enough for a reliable connection, this instrument is certainly good enough.The ISP uses an SC connector and at first I was confused about how to connect that to this instrument as there was no adapter specifically for SC connectors. The I realized the inner sleave of the SC connector will plug into the small cylinder on the instrument with a friction fit (easy to dislodge, but effective).The visual fault finder sends a pretty strong beam of red light. I passed it through a fiber but without any faults to detect I can't comment on how effective it is for that purpose. But the light coming out of the other end of the fiber was very bright.I have a better RJ45 tester than the one included with this instrument but I tested it anyway. It provides simple continuity checking on the 8 wires. There's no frequency-dependent testing, but I wouldn't expect that at this price point.Overall I'd say this is a handy instrument for the casual user who just needs to verify continuity and light signal strength. The RJ45 cable tester is a plus.
