This is a solid Chicago Style Blues album. Some great Harmonica playing from classic blues players. If you dig Blues Harmonica you need to add this CD to your collection…😎👍

If you don't have this CD already and you're a harp player, you need to get it right now. This CD is not only well mastered, mixed, and with great fidelity, but has some absolutely fantastic playing by four harp legends all on one CD. Unlike most CD's featuring soloists, the backup band on this CD is not horribly boring (see Riding With The King), in fact, it's actually very good and listening to this CD is just great fun from start to finish. Buy a copy, stick it in your car, and crank it!

How about that headline, eh?I'm real proud of it myself.Anyway...the back cover shows all four harpists, Cotton, Wells, Branch, and Bell, holding their harmonicas in a "one for all, all for one" musketeer position. And my initial reservations about this album have long since proved unfounded..."Harp Attack" is _not_ a gimmick, or a novelty item, or a mere showpiece; most of the time it really works.Backed by a sparse four-man band (drums, piano, bass, and one guitar), three former members of the Muddy Waters-band - and Billy Branch - trade off choruses and solos on this warm and relaxed little album. The liner notes are even kind enough to tell the listener who is singing and playing what on each of the 11 songs."Harp Attack" opens with one of the best songs on the album, the easy blues shuffle "Down Home Blues", and that one sets the tone...all four men sing a verse each and play a solo each, very democratic, and very good, too, actually.Other highlights include a great rendition of Rice Miller's "Keep Your Hands Out Of My Pocket", sung in Junior Wells' gritty bartone, an energetic "Little Car Blues" by Cotton, James Cotton's expressive, soulful performance of "Black Night", and a funky take on "Broke And Hungry", originally from Wells' second LP.The album mixes classic blues tunes with more contemporary sounds (Billy Branch's R&B-flavoyred compositions in particular), and even though everything isn't equally compelling, "Harp Attack" holds up well. Not a must-have album, perhaps, but a nice listen, especally for fans of Billy Branch.3 3/4 stars.

Harp Attack features 4 harp masters performing 11 songs for over 50 minutes of fabulous harp drenched blues. The disc also features an all star backing band featuring Lucky Peterson ("Double Dealin'") on piano, Michael Coleman ("Do Your Thing!") on guitar, Johnny B. Gayden on Bass and Ray "Killer" Allison on drums. Gayden and Allison are stalwarts of the blues and have backed up the likes of Johnny Winter, Son Seal, Larry McCray, Dave Hole, Buddy Guy and Don Griffin. The CD does an excellent job of maintaining cohesiveness, highlighting and then blending the various styles and vocals of these individuals without elevating the songs to jam status. While the disc does not break new ground, there is a lot of fun here.

Let me just say that I think James Cotton is one of the greats as well as Carey Bell and Junior Wells. I don't know much about Billy Branch and I don't care. This record in terms of blues power has maybe 2 good ones, and a very big maybe- 4 tops. It would seem like a great album by reading the credits but this just didn't go down right. I can't insult these guys as great players but this just gets old real real quick and it is nowhere near what these guys can do individually. Sometimes these all-star jams produce something far greater than each player-here the depth is just lost. Lucky Peterson Plays on it and though he has great technical skill, is real low on taste and soul here it seems to me. As for the fun side of it- it wears thin for me and I rarely take it off my shelf. Out of about 3 or 4 hundred recordings in my collection- this I take out one of the least. And that is just for a fine rendition of Black Night by Cotton. This just didn't work I am sorry to say. I would strongly recommend that you hear 4 or 5 of these tracks before shelling out a ridiculous amount of money to buy the cd. I just can't say that this record is worth it at all. A solo album by one of these fellas would be more worth the while. It is just mostly songs that don't stand up to the passing of time like an old Howlin' Wolf record is. I just don't care for it and think you are better off somewhere else. If you want a recommendation for a great find than here are two of my favorites of all time : West Side Soul, by Magic Same Maghett and T-Bone Blues, by T-Bone Walker. This is just a fluke in these guys careers I think.

This is the Cd that hooked me on blues harp - had it over 3 years now and it still is one of the best. Four of the greatest having what was obviously a great time playing. A must have if you like the true low down harp music.

I can't imagine a better album demonstrating the power of electric blues in general or the force of the harp in particular. If there is such a thing as a perfect blues disc, this is it. Not only do the players reveal their awesome musical chops, but they let a bit of their stage personalities come through also.

It must've looked great on paper. This Grammy-award-winning album has an unbeatable roster, but somehow the elements don't gel. I think it's just too sloppy a mix - the originals of these songs have much more to offer. Still, you gotta love Cotton's 8-minute tortured version of "Black Night" (which, for my money, tops Charles Brown's) or the four of them rapping about big-legged women on "My Eyes Keep Me In Trouble." I grew less fond of this album with time, but it's still good for a little smile.
