このスケールでは久しぶりに登場したP-40の新作キットですが、先発の1/48キット同様に不自然なパーツ分割が印象を悪くしています。この分割はメーカーにとっては安いコストでバリエーションを出せるメリットがありますが、モデラーには組み立てが煩雑になるだけのデメリットしかありません。しかもこのパーツ割でも出せないF/L型は出さなかったのは卑怯です。バリエーションのK型、M型、N型も数回しか出さなかったので、無理して出したバリエーションも大して売れなかったのでしょう。もっとも手間を惜しまなければ最良のP-40になるのには違いなく、竹一郎氏が原型を手掛けたパイロットフィギュアは絶品です。マーキングは、太平洋と欧州で戦った数少ないエースのランダース中尉機と、有名なシャークマウスを機首に描いたレクター少佐機の二種が入っています。個人的には高い評価は下せないキットですが、独特のパーツ分割を許容できるなら悪くないキットかも知れません。

I just received the kit and looked it over, I was astounded that it only took 10 days to get here! I really wasn't expecting it for at least 2 or 3 weeks more weeks...Amazing! It looks good so far, I counted 186 pieces (17 aren't used) with some very nice decals. So far I'm very happy. This is perhaps the most enjoyable model I've done yet! What I really enjoyed about it was not only the fit but the quality of the plastic...the tiny parts didn't break up when I tried to get them off the tree as with most. To the smallest piece it was great detail and clean. I may do another one of these just for fun...Hasegawa IMO is tops in affordable models and this one is a gem for the money!

This kit is one of the best from Hasegawa. Attention to details is great, included the often neglected cockpit. The only complaint is about the windscreen, it is for a later model of the P-40 family (check out pictures, there is an extra frame on each side that should be sanded off, not easy since the frame is engraved). Otherwise, the model looks like a lot of fun out-of-the-box.

先日作った同シリーズの鍾馗がよくできていたので、次にP-40Eを作りました。P-40といえば代表的な型が3つ思い浮かびます。真珠湾攻撃のときに迎撃に飛び立ったB型、機首ラジエターが大きくなった本格量産型のE型、キャノピー後部が直線的になり胴体後部も延長された生産量の最も多いN型。今回のキットは私が最もP-40らしいと思うE型ですが、N型等もバリエーションに加えることを考慮したパーツ割になっています。N型にあってE型にない機首の小さな点検口5か所がモールドされているので、説明書に「この部分の凹線をパテなどでうめて、目の細かいサンドペーパーなどで仕上げてください。」と書かれています。パネルラインを気にするかたはそれ以外にも機首、翼機銃、キャノピー後部、胴体後部のパテ埋めが必須になります。こいった手間や変則的なパーツ割のせいで不満に思うユーザーもいると思います。キット自体は段差やスキマが少しできる部分もありますが、それほど古い製品ではないのでハメ合わせは全体的に良好です。説明書ではラダーの可動索を「反対側も取り付けてください」と指示していますが、実機では左側だけに付いています。デカールは2種類で、箱絵になっているTexsas LonghornとP-40の定番といえるフライングタイガースです。シャークマウスのデカールは吸気口付近をきれいに貼るのは無理なのでペイントで補修しなければなりません。良くできたキットですが今回は変則的なパーツ割で余計な手間がかかったので、星をひとつ減らして4点としました。
