Naming your album ROOTS pretty much gives the listener an idea in advance that what he or she may be getting is some of the "stuff" that the artist was influenced by as he/she was forming their own sound. Johnny Winter, I always thought was someone GOD HIMSELF put here, and he was a direct link to the John Lee's, the Muddy's, The Howlin' Wolf's, and I could go on and on. But he's NOT a DIRECT link, there was a "missing link" (no pun intended") of music in between those I mentioned and Johnny. He's just so ULTIMATELY TALENTED, that you assume there was nothing in between them and him. If someone told me Robert Johnson met Johnny Winter at that Ol' Crossroads and gave him his git, this would surprise me NOT ONE BIT! On to Roots. Every song on here has at least one guest, and they do an EXCELLENT job! I got the vinyl, not that it really matters, so side 1 starts with T-Bone Shuffle with Sonny Landreth. Excellent jam with both slide players showin' off his mad skills. Further On Up The Road follows with Jimmy Vivino from Conan O'Brien's Basic Cable Band, and he really rocks it. Does a great job. Great song done proud! Next up is Done Somebody Wrong with Warren Haynes, one of my favorites, a guy who can play with ANYONE and either just add some nice subtly played pieces to enhance the song, or add something MORE. Something so, so, so much MORE, TO WHERE WARREN MAKES THE SONG GO! The man is brilliant. Next up is Got My Mojo Working, it's NOT Johnny's song, but it should be! After that is Last Night with some great harp blowin' by Big John Popper, and side A ends with Vince Gill just nailin' Maybellene. Awesome job by Big Vince on an awesome song. Side B starts with Susan Tedeschi adding her Angelic voice AND guitar playing to Bright Lights, Big City. She really does have a voice like an angel it is just so pretty. Honky Tonk follows that with Brother Edgar adding to that one, and then it's one of my ALL TIME FAVORITE SLIDE BLUES SONGS PLAYED BY ONE OF THE GREATEST SLIDE PLAYER TO EVER PICK UP A CORICIDIN BOTTLE. I'm speaking of course of Derek Trucks. The Late, Great, Elmore James James my have wrote Dust My Broom, but Derek could play it every night and it would only make my day better! Short Fat Frannie with Paul Nelson and Come Back Baby with John Medeski finish off the last two songs on Side B. Overall, a tremendous album. I'm really enjoying it. Johnny is NOT a well Man healthwise. When I saw him at The Crossroads Festival in Chicago in 2010 he needed help getting out to the stage. It could have been the heat, it was over 100 and humid too. But when he's healthy, Man, Johnny The Man can STILL bring it! Buy ROOTS. You won't be sorry. You'll be really, really happy actually!

Back to Form. Toll!
