Well-written and well-researched, Charles Spencer takes us on a journey reading like a modern-day detective novel rather than the story of an important period of history. Just a fine product overall.

I knew nothing of the revenge of Charles II on those responsible for the trial and execution of his father. This is a well paced and well written book of great interest to anyone interested in the Civil War and its consequences . Not for those of a delicate disposition as the descriptions of the violence and the executions don’t hold back.

Always a fan of historical writing that is a page turner I found that this book is that. A sad and contentious time in the history of England, the author informs the reader of the fate of the men who killed King Charles I after sketching out his reign, all of whom affected the way things are done in the British Parliament even today. I became aware of this when I toured the Palace at Westminster. Because of this book, I had a deeper understanding of tour references that I otherwise wouldn't have (particularly as an American). Highly recommended.

Really enjoyed this book. Well written: reads like a novel. Real life can be much more exciting than fiction, especially when well written. Spencer has captured the times of King Charles and his execution in a story format that will keep readers interested and in suspense until the last page. A great insight to an important period in England's history. An amazing book, very well written. Traitors, villains, heroes, the hunted, the hunters, and palace intrigue. I highly recommend. Enjoy!

A good summary of the fate of the men who signed the death warrant for Charles I. This account is even-handed and consistently interesting. I found the accounts of the regicides who fled to New England and spent their lives as fugitives there especially fascinating. The account conveys the search for vengeance of the of the King (Charles II) and the ruthlessness his servants in tracking down and destroying those responsible for the former king's death. A very enjoyable and engaging book.

After beheading Charles I and turning England into a republic, the rest of the royal family escapes Britain and goes into a type of witness protection program of the time. After the experiment of the new government fails miserably, it is time to return a monarch to the throne. Charles II is found and given his crown back on the head he managed to keep. Like any good son, he wanted to avenge his father`s brutal killing and decides to hunt down each and every man he thinks responsibly for their betrayal to his father. It takes years and lots of geography including the New World to find all of them. This is the book written by Charles, the Earl of Spencer, Princess Diana`s brother and ex-brother-in-law of another Charles, currently the Prince of Wales. How deliciously ironic. Well done if you love historical non-fiction as I do although I found some of the methods of killing his enemies quite stomach turning at times. .
