Amazon.ca Product Description

42" Structured Media Enclosures terminate home-run wires from wall outlets and provide a distribution point for voice, data, and video wiring in a residence or multiple dwelling unit. These enclosures are ideal for new installations or retrofits. They can be surface mounted or recessed by mounting between wall studs (on 16-inch centers), using provided wood screws for a clean and professionally finished appearance.

From the Manufacturer

42" SMC Enclosure and Cover: Leviton's 42” Structured Media Center (SMC) serves single family homes as command central for communications, education, entertainment, and business needs. The 42" SMC can easily accommodate DSL and cable Internet modems, networking, cable and satellite video. They also serve VoIP, IPTV, fax, multiple telephone lines, video monitoring cameras, intercom, and distributed audio. By bringing every conceivable technology distribution point together in one place, these enclosures make running cable and managing media both simple and cost effective. Incorporate a hospital grade power quality module for maximum protection from line surges. The 42” SMCs have generous capacity for up to 12 modules, and can also simultaneously accommodate many diverse functions. In larger homes, many contractors specify multiple SMCs, sometimes separating coaxial cable-based CATV or Satellite TV equipment from the Cat 5e or Cat 6 UTP-based communications and networking equipment. White powder coated 20 gauge steel (enclosure) 18 gauge steel (cover/door).

For those of you wanting to pull the trigger on an SMC cabinet - this one maybe expensive - however it is powder-coated steel and very well made. I am very satisfied with the purchase and it will pair up nicely with my 42" Leviton load center panel.

I've been building a house and I grabbed this Leviton to act as my central media closet. It's large, it has an area on the bottom for an outlet, and it has plenty of punch outs for the cabling to go into. So far I've been mounting equipment into the enclosure and working to get everything set up. So far I'm pleased with the purchase.

This is a high quality low voltage media box that worked great to hide ugly old telephone punch downs and small equipment. Only thing I would like is an easier ability to put screws into the box vs. the plastic connectors that Leviton offers. Existing holes are not threaded and are almost exactly 1/4" in diameter making it difficult to find a proper depth bolt or screw (really need a 5/16" diameter screw or similar). I have decided to drill additional holes for screws vs. using the existing holes.

Received the item dented on the right side of the box, which was kind of a annoying, and probably the carriers fault, not amazons. I had to use a small mallet to lightly tape it so that the screw holes would align. Not a huge deal. This size (42 inch) is about the best size I would consider for a complete home network/structured media center. It can fit the cable modems, router, coaxial splitters, ethernet switch, and a power strip, and leave you with some room to comfortably run wires. If you are doing a full renovation or building a house from the ground up, I highly recommend running Cat-6 cables from every room to the box and then putting jacks/keystones on each end. Also a 8 dollar rj-45 tester from monoprice goes a long way.

After doing a lot of searching for the best structured wiring hub/enclosure, I settled on the Leviton due to its ubiquity and number of accessories available. The components are available from many sources which is nice, but they are also quite pricey so I will be making some custom brackets and mounting most of my own hardware in it unless I have problem fitting something in.The box and lid itself seem to be of acceptable quality/thickness, though I would definitely prefer a heavier gauge steel or even aluminum. The fit and finish seem good enough, and the lid is attractive enough to pass the 'wife test'. 42" sounds and looks pretty large, but it will fill up quite fast once I start adding switches, routers, modems, patch boards, backup battery, cables, etc. I definitely recommend going as big as you can fit to allow you to add components in the future if need be.There are plenty of knockouts for conduit/fittings and should have no problem with routing through any of the 4 sides. Comes with mounting screws for wood studs and screws for the included cover. Cover itself is has keyholes in the top mounting holes to make installation and removal easy (nice when having to get in and out of the box regularly). In the long run, the expansion/extender frame and door upgrade will probably be worth it to allow more working depth, but for getting my project started, this box + cover were the right price, and Prime delivery got it to my door right away.Docking one star simply because the material the box is made out of seem a little thinner than it should be, and some of the edges are pretty sharp on the one I received. The lid itself is a little flimsy due to size, but should do the job and keep prying fingers of kids/pets at bay with no problem. Packaging and shipment were both acceptable, and there was no damage on arrival. In summary, I would have no problem buying a Cable Vision, Legrand or On-Q (which i think is made by Leviton too) box if it were a better deal and component availability wasn't an issue to me (for those planning on using their own hardware), but Leviton is a decent value overall if you consider the local availability of components important.

We* just installed it tonight and it went in without a hitch, holds all my toys (cable modem, router, cable splitter, gigabit switch, cable -> ethernet TV switch). There's plenty of room to run/route wires and the optional AC outlets in the bottom make for convenient power management too.*Disclaimer: by "we", I mean me fetching beers & flipping burgers and my super handy friend & contractor buddy Alex cutting drywall, and mounting this to a stud with screws... pulling power from a nearby outlet for the drop in AC power supply (additional) and generally being handy. He did say it was relatively easy however and looks like something I could have doe solo (given double the # of hours).
