It can be helpful in some cases. Quality is good, however LED light on my devise is not working. I do not use this LED light, so for me this cable tracker did good job.

This product is as far as I can tell identical to Martindale CD1000. It has the same plastics, the same display, the same accessories and the same manual. There are not many times it has come into its own, and it can be tricky to set up and use. (The manual is poor). When it's an appropriate tool, it's excellent. My last use was to locate to the nearest centimetre, a transformer concealed above a featureless plasterboard ceiling. It meant that when I drilled a 80mm holesaw through to get to it, I didn't need to repeat it or to randomly pockmark the ceiling with random openings. I literally hit the thing square centre-on.Problems can come with too much sensitivity (meaning the whole room can set it off). The connection method for the transmitter also needs experimentation. Live-cpc can "activate" a whole house whereas live-N can provide the detail needed. The manual is rubbish and points none of this out, so some experimentation will be necessary to avoid concluding the instrument is useless- it's actually excellent in the right conditions.

No problem locating a 250' underground gas line with this unit, and I'm sure it would work fine on a longer line as I was only using transmitter level 2. Very impressed for the $'s spent.

Gerät ist wirklich hochwertig mit sinnvollem Zubehör. Funktioniert super. Ich fand den Fehler an einer Stelle im Kabel, an der ich nie gesucht hätte.Manual auf Englisch, für mich aber kein Problem.Sollte man aber einmal lesen, um das Gerät vernünftig bedienen zu können.

Doesn't seem to work any better than a much cheaper wire tracer. I got this unit thinking it would be more accurate than the Noyafa NF-820 Upgraded version that I bought not too long ago, but I'm not sure it's any better when it comes to tracing the signal. The Mastech MS6818 has a few built in features that make it stand out. The large displays are large and easy to read, but this does make the units a little bigger than I would have liked only to minimize space among other tools. The displays main purpose is to give you a visual of the signal that it's picking up so that you don't have to use the audible signal if you prefer not to use both, the display is also used to switch between the settings which is nice rather than just flicking buttons and looking at indicator lights. There are only a few settings though, results mainly depend on the way that you use the unit (wiring of test leads). The settings are somewhat limited, signal level changer and frequency code changer (code changer for use with multiple units, but if you only have one unit, you most likely will only use the signal level setting). The displays also show if the battery is low, no scale just low. There is a non-contact voltage tester on the tip of the receiver to indicate if you are poking around live wires. The transmitter also has a voltmeter built into it which is shown on the bottom left of the screen. Only the receiver has a back light (which works well BTW), they definitely should have put a back light on the transmitter as well. At this price point I think they should have included a back light, Mastech cheaped out on that. They both have a built in flashlight (just bright enough, nothing special). The unit can be used on live wire up to 400V according to the manual but the box clearly states 300V @ CATIII, I assume you can use it on 347V safely just not CATIII. The unit does have internal fuses protecting it but not fused leads. That's it for the features other than the accessories it comes with like a nice case, alligator and test leads as well as a grounding rod. The instructions show batteries in the package but batteries are not included.I've used the unit only a couple times so far and like I said it's not much better IMO than another unit that I have that is 1/3 the price. This unit could NOT identify a glass fuse in a panel. A fuse that both my Klein breaker finder and Noyafa NF-820 Upgraded version did. The Noyafa NF-820 Upgraded version has adjustments on both the receiver and transmitter that allow finer tuning of the signal. I find both tracers work better when there is no power on the lines. I will do some more messing around and post my results within the next little bit.
