I have not used the cartridge yet. The box was sent in an unpadded satchel and arrived slightly crushed. However, the filter cartridge seems to be intact, thanks to the protective silicone caps on either end.

I went on a 6-day canoe trip at Algonquin with 5 other friends on the Victoria Day week-end. Used the brand new MSR cartridge filter with my MSR Gravity filter and was a total failure, tried to backwash but still is blocked. I tested my system all worked except the filter. Ended up boiling our water and used water purification tablets. Dropped-off the item at Michael's in Pickering, Purolator outlet on Monday May 29 with the return label and as of June 2, Friday still waiting for my refund. One thing I learned from this experience is, test gear/equipment before leaving on a trip.

This thing is great and is my primary water filter. But keeping the filter clean can be a challenge which is why I use my MSR miniworks to back flush this filter. I only takes a short amount to back flush with the miniworks. When using the miniworks to back flush you do need to pump slow. In camp i use the gravity filter into a 2.5 gal collapsible water jug. Important: Also bring a new (never used) spare autoflow filter with you. Even after cleaning the autoflow filter the first trip and letting dry it failed to filter the next year and had to go the spare filter on the first day. I am pretty sure for this year i will just throw out the older autoflow filters and start out with new ones. The filter thing is the only reason i gave this 4 stars.

Crazy fast!! I bought this replacement for my old MSR Autoflow filter since I was a bit hard on the old one by using dirty water. It still works, but not quite as fast as I want. This would even be a good option for a homemade gravity filter or water bladder. I know everyone likes the $20 Sawyer Mini, but I think those are junk...slow, then slower after time. I took the rubber protective caps off mine, so I'm rolling the dice on dropping and breaking it but I try to be careful. Don't forget to keep it from freezing!

I have been using the MSR autoflow gravity filter for a few years now. I have tried/used multiple filters over the years and by far this system is my favorite. On my last trip, my filter finally begged for mercy and called it quits. It was the original that came with my system. It was taking 10 - 15 minutes to filter 4 liters of pretty clear water. When we got home, I ordered this and upon receipt I ran 4 liters of tap water through my new filter. I think it took all of 2 minutes. Granted this was tap water, on my last cleaning with my old filter it took 10 -15 minutes to filter tap water as well. Needless to say, I forgot how fast this system will filter water. Just guessing, I would venture to say that I filtered over 200 liters with the old filter. Looking forward to my trip this weekend as my new filter is ready to go!

This is an essential piece of gear for ultralight backpacking. Absolutely love the ease and functionality of caring a very lightweight and reliable water filtering system. We carry two of these on backpacking trips with four to five people. It makes filling up simple quick and easy to get going again especially on long hikes.
