I have had 3 of these filters so far. I have a sawyer and a sawyer mini. I don’t like the sawyers because there are too many components including either the syringe to back flush it or the adapter for your smart water bottle to back flush it. I read a review that said this pump filter weighs about a pound and that isn’t true. Mine weighs about 8 oz. You can pump water from a very shallow poor quality water source, 3 liters per minute and it will fit right on a Nalgene bottle. You can push it into a smart water bottle but it doesn’t fit well. However if you use a short straw instead this thing can fill everyone’s bottles at camp in just a few minutes. A sawyer system will take 1/2 hour or more doing a squeeze method and hours doing drip filtration. Also this can be back flushed just by turning 2 valves around. You don’t have to carry anything extra. In defense of the sawyer it is 2 oz lighter and it’ll filter thousands of gallons while the hyper flow only does 100s of gallons. But guess what? I really doubt I’ll use more than a few hundred gallons backpacking during my life.

Worked great the first day out. By the second day, it was getting noticeably harder to pump. By the end of the third day of use, the filter required a tremendous amount of force to filter the water, and the pumping speed was about 5 minutes for a single litre (the quoted speed is 3 litres per minute). Followed all instructions for backflushing the filter during the trip, but that didn't help at all. Short of buying a new filter cartridge, this filter is now useless.

The MSR Hyperflow is the only backpacking/camping water filter I’ve used since I purchased it in 2012 or 2013. Keep the filter cartridge clean & maintained, & it will absolutely look after you for 1,000 litres. Yes, this means you should backflush the unit every 8 litres to keep it clean & functioning well, but this becomes a daily routine, just like brushing your teeth.I leave the Nalgene attachment at home to keep the weight of the filter down - the pump unit, hose & pre-filter in their case weigh in at just over 7 oz.The rate of output from the Hyperflow is simply amazing - the hose from the pre-filter is long enough to allow me to simply pump water directly into whatever container I’m filling at the moment, easily managing a couple of litres in a minute or less.

this is an amazing filter!!! i've used a small sawyer hand filter, as well as a 2L gravity filter before, and this is by far the most easy and quick to use out of all my filters. remove the safety cap, throw the pre-filter into water and start pumping! about 10 pumps to fill my 750ml water bottle, takes about half a minute!comes with a nagaline/msr bottle/reservoir adapter, but i don't take that on the trail with me for short weekend trips (i only use it for the back flushing when i get home). if i carried a nagaline bottle with me, i would just replace the cap with this adapter for convenience. typically i'll just fill my water bottle without any adapter, cradling the bottle under my arm and pumping directly into the container (then i use the container to fill my zip top reservoir). have not yet tested if this can attach directly to a regular plastic water bottle, but i believe it is designed to do this. worst case you could cut 3-4"of the tubing and use that as a straw to fill any container (or your face :) ) directly.i read a lot of complaints about the back flush process, honestly after watching one youtube video i was able to easily back flush the system. it's not that hard, just make sure you aren't in a position to have one of the rubber flow pieces roll away. the only drawback is you do need that nagaline adapter to get the job done properly - that said the sawyer needed that big syringe thingy which is only marginally lighter.overall i definitely recommend this product, it's been a great addition to my backpacking kit.
