I work for a dealer and we use these paint testers constantly all day and we have a few others that cost upwards of $4-500. I did some side by side comparisons and this thing is just as accurate as they are. Haven't run into any issues with it so far.

A good product, it's easier to use on a flat panel than on a curved surface, where precision and accuracy both depend on how close the guage is to perpendicular to the surface.

This is type of device that everyone should own, specially if you typically buy used cars or repaint items such as cars, cabinets and any other type of objects. The reading is clear, precise and very comprehensive. I’ve already used on my daughter’s car to make sure the body work done to her car was of good quality. Very pleased with this paint meter.

This is definitely a specialty item that will appeal to the gearhead nerds. I’m guilty as charged. Show me something with lights and gauges and things that go beep and I’m all ears.I'll admit, I don’t buy cars very often, so I won’t be using this for that purpose. I have friends who do, so this will come in handy either before they buy or after. I can walk around their car like a doctor with a stethoscope, prodding and poking and saying “Hummmmmm….”All joking aside, I got this primarily because I like to detail cars and when you do a scuff coat to remove minor scratches and swirls, you are actually removing some of the clear coat. You don’t ever want to go through the clear coat. The thickness of clear coats range from 38 microns (µm) to 102 microns (µm). I can take a reading before and after and hopefully, I only end up taking off immeasurable microns . I can record those readings to keep track over the years. I think this will be a very valuable tool for that.I find the device itself to be very intuitive. The only problem I have is understanding the manual (you get one written in Russian as well) and how to calibrate it. I’m still not sure if I’m doing it right but whatever I’m doing, it does seem to measure the supplied “thickness test strips” accurately. I’ve included pictures of the instructions for you to see for yourself. I highlighted what I think is the way you should do it. What works for me is, Select SNG. Press/lift it to the bare metal plate multiple times until you get a steady 0 reading. Press and hold the ZERO button. You will hear 2 beeps and then 1 beep and then see CALIB. Quick press the ZERO button again. It now knows what Zero is. Test it against the “thickness test strips”.After its calibrated, I find using the CON mode (continuous) easier than using the SNG mode. You hold it flat against the surface and as long as you hold it still, it will quickly settle into one reading. If you select SNG, you are constantly lifting and placing and getting all kinds of different readings, mostly because you are not placing it exactly flat the same way. These use 2 AA batteries (which they appear to chew through), but I prefer batteries for something like this. This isn’t going to get used that often. Rechargeables want to get topped up every few months. Batteries, as long as you remember to take them out between uses, should still be good years later. They provide a pouch that everything fits into. The calibration strips as well as the removed batteries. Nice and compact. This device may seem a little pricey but because its pretty accurate and consistent, simple, and intuitive, its well worth it if you need something to preform this task. I think it deserves 5 stars, so that is what I’m going to give it.

I don't recommend it. The reading are not accurate and cannot be calibrated. Measurements are unstable.

5 out of 5 Stars (4.8)⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐[TL;DR][QUALITY] (5/5)[VALUE] (4/5)[EASE OF USE] (5/5)[MET EXPECTATIONS] (5/5)[PACKAGING] (5/5)[REVIEW REMARKS]A must have if you are buying a used vehicle, or if you are a dealer. This tiny device can detect metal and the paint thickness on a vehicle. The device can accurately detect ferrous and non-ferrous substrates. Which simply means that it contains iron, or it does not. The presence of body filler would be indicated as non-ferrous. If you gather readings from the typical crash zones, front and rear of the vehicle, wheel wells, and doors, you should be able to see if the paint thickness is consistent and that there is no presence of filler. This device works best on non-fibreglass bodies, but I think it would still serve well as detecting paint thickness, I am not 100% certain as I could not test this aspect. The device comes with test disks, one iron (Fe) and the other is Aluminum. There is also five (5) calibration films. I like that this reader comes with 2AA (Energizer®️ brand) batteries, a carry pouch, and detailed instructions.I found that the readings I measured were consistent and within the manufacturer's margin of error. I can see how this would be an advantage to someone buying a used car (with or without car history) as it would tell you if the car was repainted, or if parts were replaced due to damage.I think it is an asset to have in your toolkit as it could steer you away from purchasing a vehicle with undocumented damage. All in all, if you or a family member are looking to swipe up a deal on a used vehicle, this device may save you plenty of headaches. The readings are easy to take and the display is legible.I recommend this paint thickness gauge based on the quality of the build, the time to use is immediate, easy to use and understand, and it is consistent. Order with confidence. In the event that experiences change or evolve, updates may be made to this review to address such developments.
