I just got back from a 2 1/2 week vacation and my large indoor palm is still alive thanks to these. Way better than the plastic spikes with a water control valve. I put two of them in the pot with a 750 ml wine bottle full of water in each. Both bottles were empty when I got home and the plant was just starting to look a little droopy. It perked right up with some more water and looks perfect now.

These work quite well. I did have one that broke in the first week.

These self-watering stakes are quite large and will fit the neck of any standard sized wine bottle. The terracotta material allows for water to slowly infuse into the soil over the course of day depending on how dry the soil is. This is great for outdoor gardens, since each beer bottle lasts for about a day and a wine bottle would last for a lot longer if you don’t want to or cannot water your plants regularly. Great for short weekend vacations. I wouldn’t recommend this for a long-term water reservoir in house plants because it can overwater your plant and cause the soil to be very moist and rot the roots. I recommend these watering stakes in an area where there is drainage and since you need to drill down fairly deep to place these stakes, this is not good for small houseplants (the bottles are also too heavy). These stakes are easy to use. I let them soak for 2 hours in water and then place a beer or wine bottle inside to let the water slowly infiltrate through. Overall, these watering stakes are great for outdoor summer use for short periods of time in soil that is able to drain.

I had a set of these that lasted a very long time, and the last one finally broke thanks to me being clumsy. So I reordered this set, and they are perfect. These are real terra cotta, so they are somewhat fragile. They have to be removed and put away in winter, because water expansion when frozen can damage. They can withstand normal wear and tear, but if you drop them onto a very hard surface, they can break (which is what I did, sadly). The new set of 4 (like the last one) will last me a very long time if I'm careful! These MUST be soaked in water before use, so they can absorb water into the terra cotta. I put the one I plan to use into a bucket of water for the night before use. Then, you did a hole to accommodate it placed so that it releases moisture where the roots of the plant end. You then add water whenever the tube runs dry to keep the terra cotta moist at all times. It's great because these will never over-water or cause root rot. They also work if you are away, sort of "self watering" the soil. The do not flood the soil, so these are not for newly planted shrubs, or anything that requires a ton of water. I love them, and I use them throughout the growing season, and they have not let me down yet!
