Great Nas. Qnap interface is not for new users. I enjoy the Nas but my family struggles a bit with the mobile device apps.

You don't need all the bells and whistles to have an effective Cloud Backup. It took a bit of doing to get it running, the drive build and intranet network speeds are excellent. I can connect an external 3.5/5G NIC but thus far, no need. It runs great, just using a pair of older 500GB drives in RAID1 and it's speeds and access times are fantastic. The 2 GB of RAM beats the hell out of competitor's 1GB solutions and while it's a bit sluggish on some apps (that normally require 4GB or more) they do function. I have it firewalled, CLAM AV protected and with Malware screening. Using it as a personal cloud backup for my phone, for my Fiancée's phone and for our files and photos on PC too. Much faster than any cloud service available and super cheap to maintain. Using old drives that were collecting dust for online storage that would cost hundreds of dollars a year to maintain. Taiwan based company so the security is solid and the network is secure.I wanted the 2.5 Gig version (my internal network is all 2.5/5/10Gig Switches and NICs but I'm satisfied with 1G transfers. It's faster than the reviews online about it (maybe because my internal network is WIRED) because I'm not using it as a wifi NAS. All Hardwired. Can't beat what I paid for it. 169 Open Boxed (never used), I will buy this again.Minimum investment for maximum gain. RAID 1 is solid and took a couple hours to synchronize (2) for 500GB, so expect massive sync times if you go up to the maximum supported drives (18GB per drive).

This is my third home NAS box in maybe 20 years, and it's light years ahead of the old NAS devices in terms of capabilities, software and design. Highly recommended, I think it's fully as good as Synology and better value.I have 2x8 TB mirrored drives in this, and I'm primarily using is as a media server at home.

I purchased this NAS to replace an older Synology Disk Station that contained only 256MB of Ram non-expandable. I had high hopes as this device has 2GB of RAM. However, those hopes were dashed when after I had it all set up, configured and loaded with all my data software performance failed to meet my expectations. Specifically, running a basic quick virus scan after 16 hours was only 7% complete.QNAP's response: "After reviewing other cases, it is due to the specifications on the NAS that antivirus scan would be slow. The system is a ARM based system with limited RAM of only 2GB. The scan uses up RAM and since it is only limited to 2GB, it will take awhile to go through all the files."I have returned the device and will go searching for a unit with better performance

Feel slow at some time, not for heavy users. Max transfer speed experienced was 11 Mbps (roughly around 100 mbps). Haven't used Plex yet. Using 2.5" hhd for around 1.5 months now. Working fine for now. 2gb ram is not enough & ram is not expandable. Havey task use 94% CPU processor & 75% ram, extra ram is used from sweep storage (8gb) which make it slow when doing heavy task. Being a bigner little tricky to use. Overall good compared to price. Deducted 1 star for not adding Ram extension slot.

I just wanted a cheap NAS solution to plug my existing 8TB NAS drive into and this fit the bill, but unfortunately it turned out to be more of a hassle than I thought so I had to return it. There was no way to use the NAS without formatting my drive first, which was a deal breaker for me. Additionally there are a plethora of features and settings jam-packed into the NAS, which is obviously a good thing, but it made for a bit of a convoluted experience.Of course it goes without saying I may not be the target audience for this NAS (...yet), so take it with a grain of salt.

I got tired of my home network music access working when it felt like it, so looked into using a NAS and chose this QNAP model after reading reviews. I have some IT experience but no longer work in it so this was admittedly a tad complicated, but I also admit I'm the kind of guy who doesn't like asking for directions when I'm lost. I realized at the mid-point I was complicating things by *not* stopping and making sure the home network access was solid before worrying about the online cloud part of things. The unit itself is not large and the process of adding either size SATA drives was easy. On a desk shelf, it is a bit noisy as you can hear a bit of hum and vibration when the hard drive or drives are spinning. The power cable is a tad short in my humble opinion. You start by installing a "Q-Finder" app on your computer attached to the same network, and step-by-step the software walks you through assigning an admin login and setup on your LAN. Once you wade into the out-of-home access arena is where I had problems, but when I realized I didn't want that, the rest fell into place. There are tweaks you make with the QNAP *and* the devices you want to use to access the files to get it all to work. Go slow and careful and use the Help and online searches and it comes together. Your phone, tablet or other device will need to login the first time with your admin name and password to see and play the files but once you are thru that hoop the fun begins. This QNAP plays MP3s more quickly and without any hiccups than several server apps I used for years on Windows. The QNAP has it's own processor and RAM so it is way faster producing file lists and starting playback. The user interface on the computer is quite nice too. Between the cost of the QNAP and a nice fast 3.5" 2TB hard drive I had $300 invested but I am happy with the results.I didn't have to contact tech support so that was a win. I could also enable an external drive connected by USB for access. Be aware that using a pre-loaded drive on the inside is not the idea--the QNAP formats/erases any drive you install internally.Hope this review was helpful.

Had an old TS-212 that was working fine but getting pretty old and was quite slow at times. It is so old that system updates stopped working.Removed the hard drives from the 212 and put them in the 233 and fired it up. Pretty much everything came up just like before with the same data, login and password but a lot faster. Only the network address changed but QFinder gave me the new address. The 233 wanted system updates, which took a little while.Have an external USB drive for real-time backups and had to find the app for that (HBS3 - Hybrid Backup Sync 3) and load and configure it again.Overall, I'm quite satisfied with this unit.Only negative is the on-line tutorials barely help. The main issue is they are mostly long videos and one has to wait for them to get to the point, if possible. Sometimes it may not be the correct video so 5 minutes are wasted wading thru it. Their PDF qts5.0x user manual is better.Update 8/3/2023Been running for 10 months. Failed yesterday - seemed to be running but no Ethernet communication and so can't talk to it. Ended up pulling the older and slower QNAP 212 unit out of storage and using that to get up and running again. This 233 is in the trash. Bought a new 233 that installed quickly and is running fine.Update 8/22/23Have downgraded my rating from 3 to 1 star.I'm done with QNAP. I am disgusted with this model. The second 233 quit today with exactly the same symptom of the prior 233.
