A mid-price release of Hammond's 1965 album of blues covers. The son of legendary talent scout John Hammond Sr, who discovered Bob Dylan and Bruce Springsteen amongst others, John Jr. has recorded over 30 albums. His Vanguard releases are consistent sellers. This release was notable for including three future members of the Band - Robbie Robertson, Garth Hudson and Levon Helm. Also contributing are Charlie Musselwhite and Mike Bloomfield. Vanguard Masters. 2005.

It's one of the Best Blues-Rock albums out there, and you get Michael Bloomfield on Piano at the start of his career. Essential for all of us fans of this particular variant of the genre. John Hammond, Jr. is right up there with the greats!

Hammond was the son of John Hammond legendary producer and A&R man for Columbia, he signed Count Basie, Dylan, Springsteen and Aretha very early in their careers. On these 12 classic blues songs he is joined by the members of the Band, who backed up Romping Ronnie Hawkins and played bars across Canada, Hawkins later relocated to Canada and bought a farm where he entertained John and Yoko. Musselwhite plays harmonica, Robertson on guitar, Levon Helm on drums with Garth Hudson on organ, guitarist Bloomfield plays piano. Dripping in atmosphere and this album was issued earning critical reviews and was his most commercially successful album to date. It was his last official studio date for Vanguard. 12 great tracks including Down in the Bottom (Dixon), Long distance Call (Muddy Waters), Who Do You Love (Ellas McDaniel) also cut previously with Ronnie Hawkins, Judgment Day (Robert Johnson) So Many Roads (Marshall Paul) You Can't Judge a Book by the Cover (Dixon), Baby Please Don't Go (Big Joe Williams) and Big Boss Man (Luther Dixon/Al Smith). Required listening captures John Hammond and his friends at a remarkable peak.

Hmmmm !!!

This is a classical blues-rock record. It is well played, though not original nor innovative. The great guitarist Mike Bloomfield contributes here with the the piano! Apparently, he was afraid of having to compete against Robbie Robertson, who later played lead guitar with The Band. Although in the same category as the John Mayall's Blusesbreakers with Eric Clapton or the first Led Zeppelin, it is not as good.

I returned the first CD I bought and tried a second one, same terrible sound. I mean obvious bad distortion! Amazon was great in letting me replace the first one when I was over the 30 days and made it easy to return the second one. I think there is a CD issue of this material with better sound but I can't remember the details right now. Too bad about the bad sound as it has great playing by Robbie Robertson.
