(Reviewed by my husband, an semiretired clergy... book was a gift to him.)Fr Martin (a Jesuit), brings to life for each of us the way of spirituality 'the Ignatius Way'.Scholarly, reverently, with humour & insight, Fr. James presents us with a guide to a personal relationship with Our Lord & Saviour, based on both religion & spirituality. He cleverly introduces us to his "God of surprises" - a playful fun image of God.For me it was like being introduced to an old friend (Jesus) & finding out that He is everything and much, much more.Fr. clearly challenges the reader to blend religion & spirituality based on faith, hope & charity, seeing God in others & allowing others to see God in us.

This is a book I could happily recommend to anyone, regardless of faith, background and degrees of scepticism on matters spiritual. It is highly readable, mixing humour with profundity, anecdote with quotation ensuring that the reader is drawn on; ever keener to learn the wisdom that is to be found on every page of this deeply inspiring and in places, moving book. There is so much to say about this book but there are a few ideas worth picking out.. Live a simple life- focus on what is important, what makes us better people, stronger in faith and more accepting and loving of others?. Prayer – our relationship with God is basis for everything, from the beginning to the end of life, from first thing in the morning to the end of the day. So we should have a routine that ensures we actively relate to God..Reflection- What have we done with our day, where do we owe gratitude, what was good and what was less so. Are we doing the will of God as we discern it or simply wasting our time in dissolute behaviours?.Are we sufficiently ‘detached’ from the World and our own selfish feelings to be able understand the dictates of conscience and the needs of others? Do we have enough time to ourselves to really discern what we need to do with our lives?.Do not be afraid of words like ‘Obedience’ and ‘humility’, they are the keystones to a rich inner life. They do not imply weakness or derogation of personal responsibility, merely a way of being that allows a person to grow in faith and surety of feeling. The Jesuit approach is not about being ‘happy’ and ‘having it all’. it is about the individual adopting a particular set of attitudes, behaviours and beliefs that strengthens their relationship with God and helps them deal with all that is good and bad in life.Wonderful book. Highly recommended.

For anyone who wishes to find the Divine, this book helps us to see God's presence at all times in our lives and in creation. Simply put, but deep with riches for those who wish to find them. Fr Martin has a friendly and approachable writing style, injecting humour and personal anecdotes into his exploration of Ignatian spirituality, while telling the story of his journey to grow closer to God through joining the Jesuits. This book has enriched my life and I recommend it to anyone.

A very "user-friendly" spiritual guide, based on Saint Ignatius' famous "Spiritual Exercises", with a more XXI century approach. The book's step by step, clear language insight is highly recommended for anyone looking to replenish the spirituality in his or her life. Nowadays spirituality is, sadly, the most forgotten aspect of human life. A really profound and highly recommended reading.

I purchase the book to complement the audio book version as reference to specific topics. I had gone thru the audio book version several times and when I want to understand a specific topic, I read and re-read that portion in the book. It is a very helpful , practical and down to earth piece of literature on spirituality . Ironic as it may sound. But that is in my opinion. It had helped me understand and answer the many questions and doubts about my faith.
