Loved this book ever since I discovered it in a library as a child decades ago!How great is it to have my own personal copy after all these years!

I have loved this book since I was a kid. It was the very first book I picked out myself at a book fair at school. I think maybe 3rd grade? I don’t quite remember. I knew it by heart. Then I grew up and lost track of it somewhere. I bought a second copy a few years ago and shared it with my grandkids. They commandeered that one awhile back so this is now my third copy. It still makes me as happy today at age 57 as that 3rd grader.

I was SO excited to get my hands on an actual library copy of this book. I checked it out several times a year from my elementary library. Such good memories!

Good collection of short horror tales for kids. All end with a twist that's not as scary as the child will first think. Good for kids just getting in the horror genre

I first read this back in 1982, having bought it from my uncle for 50 cents, and it still remains one of my favorite books ever. First published in the 1950's this book is a collection of scary, funny, and 'true' stories, as well as a few poems and supposedly useful facts about ghost (such as how to summon them or avoid them altogether). Clearly aimed at kids, some of the stories can be a little 'jarring' at times, depending on the kid, I guess, so parents, be advised. But unless your kid is a total wimp they should be fine. Full of evocative charcoal illustrations (especially of the kid who stabbed a knife into his coat on top of a grave) and stories that are short but to the point this reprint is a no-brainer for Halloween, unless you want to pay top dollar for an older copy; even copies of the 1980's paperback I have can cost you plenty. Buy it. You won't regret it.

I had this book as a kid and loved it. when I saw that Dover had republished it I just *had* to read it again. It is a collection of ghost stories from around the world, though mostly English, Canadian Maritime and African-American in origin. And not just stories (which are usually only a few paragraphs long) but there is poetry, games, songs and even a Newfoundland sea shanty. The tales are written in a story-tellers voice and meant to be told aloud, some even have instructions for the storyteller. A lot of the stories are humorous and this is reflected in Kurt Werth's wonderful comic illustrations. Maria Leach was born in the USA of Nova Scotian parents but then retired to Nova Scotia herself in the fifties when she began to write.
