The soft white setting is best for illuminating pictures or art. Bright white is obnoxious, but might be useful for a dartboard light. The remote does not have much range/distance but is useful when close to the light unit. We bought 2 of these, {one slightly smaller} and the remotes worth with either light, which is a plus.
