About this item

  • Studio quality Mic Preamp/Channel Strip Processor
  • Classic dbx Compression puts great sound within easy reach
  • Frequency tunable De-Esser reduces sibilance and high frequency distortion
  • Enhancer increases the detail and definition of the high and low frequencies
  • Program adaptive Expander/Gate

The dbx 286s is a full featured Channel Strip Processor that delivers a studio quality microphone/instrument preamplifier and four processors that can be used independently or in any combination. Why mic up vocals and instruments through a noisy, blurry mixer? The sonically pristine dbx 286s Mic Preamp has all the features you need, including wide-ranging input gain control, switchable +48V phantom power, and an 80Hz high-pass filter to remove low frequency hum, rumble or wind. Use the patented dbx OverEasy compressor to transparently smooth out uneven acoustic tracks or deliver that classic "in your face" vocal performance that only a dbx compressor can. Eliminate vocal sibilance and high frequency distortion from instruments such as cymbals with the frequency tunable De-Esser. Fine-tune the Enhancer HF Detail control to add sparkle and crispness to your tracks and make adjustments to the LF Detail control to add fullness and depth to vocals and bass instruments while cleaning up the muddy low midrange frequencies. And, the separate threshold and ratio controls on the Expander/Gate allow you to subtly reduce headphone leakage or radically gate noisy guitar amps. The dbx 286s offers a full compliment of metering and status LEDs to visually guide you to achieving the right sound. The floating balanced XLR Mic Input accepts balanced or unbalanced inputs to easily connect to professional and home studio microphones. The additional 1/4" TRS Line Input can accept balanced/unbalanced signals to process live electronic instruments or pre-recorded tracks at mix down. Use the Insert jack to interface between the Mic Preamp and the signal processing sections to "loop out" to external processors (such as EQ or delay unit) or to mix the Mic Preamp's signal out to an external destination.

I have a shure sm7db hooked into this, which then runs into a scarlet focusrite, and into my pc, and my gosh does it sound incredible.I get radio quality vocals without any post processing. My microphone is fairly decent, but this thing is doing a ton of heavy lifting.I followed the settings listed in another reviewers Amazon review, which I highly recommend, and haven't needed to tweak it since. The raw audio requires next to nothing done to it after the fact, I'm not an audiophile, but it sounds almost perfect to my ears.Using this on calls is phenomenal, it is super crispy, even over most websites trashy audio bitrate.Shure SM7s and their variations are good at blocking out background noise, but with this thing, it's unbelievable. My recording desk is in an unfinished room, with two large fish tanks directly behind it. I always have a dehumidifier running in the room, and usually a fan. My microphone doesnt pick up on a single sound, even in the background while I'm talking, its actually insane.I bought mine for $200, and even at that price I thought it was amazing. Ive seen it go as low as $150. If youre looking for a stellar processor that doesnt cost a grand, go with this thing.

Sent open box unit. Box was clearly damaged. Face of unit was dirty and slightly scratched. Packed loosely in bigger box with no padding. This was clearly a defective unit someone sent back as a return, and I ended up getting it. Not impressed! Will be returning or exchanging after talking to Amazon customer service! Will update review after this is resolved and get a new one.

Love this product. Best analog sounding and still worth using in a digital world.

Bought this for podcasting, works well for adding gain and cutting out noise, "ess" sounds etc, but was real difficult to dial in, still figuring it out. Every mic and every voice and every location will be different, so all the online tutorials only help so much, you have to continually test and tweak until you find the right spot for you set up. Took me days.

It records good, clean audio beautifully. Also there are also many videos online on how to set it up for your purposes. Works exactly as expected for a decent price point.

I was running my rode NT1A mic through the built-in pre-amp on my Akai EIE interface. Always looking for that next upgrade, I bought the DBX 286s. The difference was profound.Even with all the 286s effects bypassed, the pre-amp by itself has an amazingly rich analog tone. It is electronically very accurate, allowing for seamless butt-end edits without the need for cross-fading.The 286s compressor, de-esser, and gate smooth out things like mouth noises, popping p's, and breaths. And the enhancer (when used conservatively) gives a subtle depth and sweetness the color of my Rode NT1A.

I did a LOT of research before dishing out for this unit and it seemed to be just what I was looking for. It was. The pre-amp is strong and quiet. The effects are very user friendly and easy to set up for any voice. The expander/gate is particularly effective for raising the sound floor and eliminating much of the room noise, that will hamper any smaller scale recording setup.
