The littles absolutely adored this! For various reasons, they can't have a live dog right now (and they are too young to help take proper care of one), so this was a compromise for them. They were delighted and played with it for hours. You will need 3 AAA and 2AA batteries for the toy and remote. It would be nice if charging it was an option, but it's not. But overall, a sweet toy that is worth the price. 5/5

It does all the things as described. It comes with a short instruction "sheet" which is accurate however ideally lacking in providing a clear understanding of the toy's functionality. After reading the instructions and playing with the toy dog I slowly figured out how this thing works.Turn it on... gently petting it on the head causes it to "bark and pant" and walk a bit. After a while it stops. Petting the dog's head again wakes him up again.There are a list of commands you can say to the dog when it's "resting" and it will respond. However I found that you need to speak the commands exactly like it wants to hear... "How do you do that" you may be asking now. Well, the toy comes along with a little "remote" which is shaped like a toy bone. If you press the "star" button the remote "speaks" a command, and if the dog hears this, it does what it's told: SIT, STAND, WAG TAIL, NOD, + WALK. Each press of the star button results in the remote "speaking" the next command. Now if you "talk" similarly to the way the remote speaks/sounds (and loud or close enough), then the dog will do the command you spoke too! Pressing the music notes button on the remote results in the dog playing "digital music".There is a button on the side of the toy dog. when momentarily pressed it next will "record" whatever talking it hears and then play it back to you. **BUT** it digitally alters (raises the voice to a higher pitch without speeding up the speech). So what the toy dog "talks" (repeats) back to you sounds like a completely different voice - I guess that is to make you believe that the toy dog is repeating (parroting) back to you what you just said to it ! Cool ! This recording / parroting back happens repeatedly. I'm not sure when it stops. leaving it alone for a while seems to time out this function... or simply turn it off and on again with the power button near the battery door.I must note that this toy dog is quite vocal. It does make it's sounds (barking, panting, whining) whenever it does anything. Although not super loud - it's easy to hear in the next room. You'll know when your child is playing with thier dog.You need to supply your own 3 penlight (AA) batteries to power the dog itself, AND you'll need to supply 2 AAA batteries for the "remote control".The package comes along with quite a few neat looking accessories to help the child "take care" of the dog. Included is a toy feeding bowl !At first I thought the price of CAD$49.99 was a bit high for this toy... Boy was I wrong. For all this dog does and what you get... it's a very fair price. This will be a Christmas gift for my 4 year old niece. She wants a dog. I firmly believe this will be a BIG HIT and keep your playing with it for hours. JUST IN CASE... I'll be including some extra AA batteries because I don't know how long each set may last (especially since they power motors to animate and walk the dog).

This is probably one of the most irresistibly cute toys I have seen in many years. The puppy's coat is soft and silky. The face features and details manage to capture the look of a sweet, playful puppy. The lacey little collar and head bow are just the right amount of embellishment. I think any child (and most adults) will love this toy at first sight. It also works properly, going through all its built-in actions exactly as described. What the listing page cannot convey, though, is the fact that this toy is not obnoxiously loud. It barks, and makes music and other sounds, but I found that the volume level is quite acceptable. I also think that the control system is surprisingly well designed, in that the puppy can be controlled with or without the remote control, and inside the abdominal opening (where the batteries go) there is a kind of master switch that seems to shut everything down when it's time for the puppy to stop playing. This toy "walks" with an obviously mechanical gait that has the advantage of being slow enough to apprehend, in the event that it is headed in the wrong direction. The puppy comes with a bag of accessories that will enhance play time, and the remote control is even in the shape of a dog bone. Clearly, I think this is a great toy. Great, but not perfect. I struggled with getting the battery compartment open, primarily because the opening is small for adult hands, although I really appreciated the fact that the teeny tiny screw did not fall out and get lost. (The small screwdriver is in the bag with the puppy's toys and other accessories.) Both the puppy and the remote control take standard, use-and-discard batteries. It took a long time, but my next-door (poor guy) son-in-law finally has me on board with the benefits of rechargeable products. No batteries are included with this toy. The puppy needs three AA, and the remote control takes two AAA. However, the toy works satisfactorily without the remote. I am also a little troubled by the contradictory nature of the product information. This toy is clearly labelled as being intended for children aged three years and older. And yet the illustrations on the product listing page show children obviously under three playing with the puppy. Even with these issues, I do like this toy, and I think it is a good product.

The command for the action of the toy

The golden retriever mechanical puppy arrived in a timely fashion with no problems. Everything worked great, except the puppy didn't walk right away. I think the fur over the battery compartment got crimped in its back leg because it was definitely humming like it was on. After rechecking the batteries and shifting the fur, it has worked fine ever since. This pup was definitely the cutest one I saw in that the battery compartment is covered with fur on the belly instead of being bare plastic. It's amazing all the different things it can do. The only negative is that it didn't come with a leash. But it came with a bunch of interactive accessories. The walking feature works, but they're very small steps. You could not take it on a real walk around the block unless you have an hour to kill. Regardless, my 3 y.o. granddaughter LOVED her new puppy and carried it around all day. I think she liked the tail wagging and barking features the most. The adults were impressed with the commands and tricks and that it could repeat sentences spoken to it. Highly recommend.
