Bring you the taste of South Asia

red stem

Tropical sensation

Malabar spinach originates from South Asia. With veins and stems that vary from a deep purple to a bright red and massive leaves that put on a display, this tropical vine is exotically beautiful.

Local adaptation

One can readily harvest leaves when needed in the kitchen. Young shoots re-grow quickly.

Garden attraction

Malabar spinach is loyal to its tropical origin. The plants are slow to emerge in the cold soil but grow fast as the mercury rises.

They thrive under the full sun and heat. However, the growth stalls once the temperature drops.

snow

Problem

Do not stand frost at all. They die at once at the first frost.

Beyond Hundredfold : Nature in its full potential

Goldfinch on a sunflower

When restoring native plants to an area, beneficial insects, birds, and small mammals are welcomed back following the plants. For example, in North America, native oak trees support over 500 species of caterpillars, whereas ginkgos, a landscape tree from Asia, host only 5 caterpillars, according to American Ecologist Doug Tallamy.

As a result, healthy microbes (good bacteria and fungi) are restored as well. The presence of this biodiversity plays an important role in the health of the soils, which in turn enhances the air and the groundwater as the soils plays a crucial role in the carbon cycle. However, when biodiversity decreases, the soils, the air, and the groundwater are negatively affected. This not only causes enormous environmental threats but also direct hazards to human health. Our message can be more effectively communicated if the general public knows how close to home biodiversity loss can hit.

Seeing nature in its full potential is our best reward. Planting native plants is one step closer to restoring biodiversity. That is why we never get tired of spreading native seeds.

Germinated within a week as long as the seeds are NOT buried. Just place the seeds on surface of the soil. Vibrant growth in leaves. I planted them May 1, 2022 and was ready for harvest in July 1. The plant also grows a lot of seeds. Now I have enough seeds for the next season.

Not sure how many I originally planted but I'm gonna say almost every one sprouted. Even after I thought they were done I had more sprouting when I went to transplant the seedlings.
