John Thompson's Modern Course for the Piano – First Grade

By John Thompson

Willis Music

The legendary Modern Course series provides a clear and complete foundation in the study of the piano that enables the student to think and feel musically. It's known as the method for quick, dedicated learners. It's also well-regarded as a self-teaching method for the mature player. The First Grade may be preceded by Teaching Little Fingers to Play and/or Teaching Little Fingers to Play More. The 2018 reprint of Grade 1 features less fingering and fresh engravings.

Excellent book for beginners. The lessons are designed to develop skilled piano players out of a person who knows nothing about piano playing.

This little book is certainly meant for a first time student wanting to learn how to play the piano It will make my teaching efforts that much more easier!

I can easily follow the instructions on the book. My husband assist me if I have a question. Otherwise, an adult can learn how to play the piano on her own.

My 9 yr old son is learning piano using this book. It's full of simple melodies that build in complexity/difficulty. And, the written explanations are clear and help move his knowledge forward. I would recommend this book.

It starts slow and progresses through the whole book with exercises that that a student can achieve, focusing on a perfect five finger coordination. I would say this is more aligned with prepA and prep B from RCM than level one. In which case, I would say this book is better suited for the very beginner, kindly named music kidnergarten.Despite its foundational work, it is nonetheless well structured, all the exercises are melodic, and it represents an important step not to be skipped when learning piano. Only skip this book if you are solid on tempos (including 6/8), eight notes/rests, and initial dances. Otherwis, I recommend going through it even if at a faster pace.

I’ve been using this book with all of my students and it’s really great! Not a beginner book but it’s a good transition book between absolute beginners and the RCM series.

Durchaus empfehlenswert.

I used this lesson book for a few months when I was young, and thought I would give the piano another try, as a senior. It is dated, but works, if you have a mentor or some background in music. As a stand alone book for a beginner it could be better.
