My mom used to play with fashion plates when she was a kid. I missed out on this kind of toy, but I got them for my cousin May for Christmas and she loves them!

I’m glad I only got 1 of these for my twins to share and not 2. If I didn’t destroy the package trying to get it open I would return it. Doesn’t work well at all total garbage

My niece loved this for her Christmas present. The size is a bit larger than I was expecting but produces decent pictures and lots of different options.

The kids do seem to enjoy it. But, there are only 4 colored pencils in the whole set - yellow, pink, green and blue. The yellow barely shows up. The pencils seem to have hard lead, so they don't color very well. Younger kids also have a harder time using pencils. If you buy a set as a gift, PLEASE consider getting a box of crayons to go with it. Kids like having more colors on their designs. It doesn't come with paper, so cut copy paper in half. It fits between the plates and the top frame. The top doesn't bounce as much when you rub the black crayon over the paper and plates to see the outline of the design if you first completely close the tray and lock the top frame down. We bought both the original and the princess sets so the kids could swap plates between the sets and make even more outfits. These two sets have different colored plates so it's easy to put them in the right case. Two sets also means both kids can make designs at the same time.

My daughter loves this toy. Brought back memories to when I had one. We bought additional colored pencils as it only came with a few. The design could be improved. She is five and has trouble opening and closing the latch on her own. Otherwise it’s a great toy!

I had one of these growing up and I like that the concept hasn't changed much. It is portable/travel friendly. The catch for the frame is sturdy and clasps well; it is also what prevents the tday from sliding out when carried. The only thing I wished it came with was some paper to get started. Too large a paper size can get in the way and shift with the shading. We ended up tearing standard letter-size printing paper into half which fitted rather well. An alternative will be to use 6x9in unlined paper from any stationery store. I took a star away because I wished it had a paper tray for some paper storage on the go.I haven't tried it out but it looks like any standard size crayon will fit the holder when the black crayon runs flat

My kids got this kit for Christmas, and they have really enjoyed playing with it. For those who haven't used one before, the plates include raised images. You put a paper over the image and then rub the paper with a sideways crayon to imprint the image on the paper. For my younger daughter (almost 4), it took a while to get the hang of rubbing crayons sideways rather than drawing with the ends. My older daughter (6) picked it up faster. Both really enjoyed the process and the many possible combinations of heads/bodies/skirts. The pieces are all durable and well crafted.I do wish that the kit included some paper cut to size, but you can cut letter paper in half to fit. It would also be helpful if the kit had space for more crayons and included more crayons to do the rubbing (it only includes one rubbing crayon and 4 coloring crayons). You can supplement with crayons from other sets, but they don't fit well inside the kit. Finally, my daughters each got a different kit (one princess and one fashion design), and the pieces are not interchangeable across kits. This was disappointing. The kits are almost exactly the same size, but the plates on one are just a tiny bit bigger. With all that said, the actual rubbing is so fun that this is still a very good, inexpensive toy.

I had a toy similar to this when I was younger and really wanted to get this new Melissa and Doug one for my daughter, but I thought it would be too old for her (she's 4). Turns out it's just right for her, and she'll also grow into it and be able to color it in better as she gets older. She loves customizing the princesses with the 3 different tiles and is pretty good at the rubbing. It seems as though the raised places aren't all totally even, though, and if you just run with the side of the crayon flat it doesn't show up well in various spots. She doesn't care, you get the general idea, but I go in with the crayon and fine-tune the rubbings when I play with her. It's great that the rubbing crayon/holder, colored pencils, and tiles all fit neatly inside and it's an all-in-one kit she can haul around. That being said, the four colored pencils are sub-par for really coloring the pictures in. She always brings her full set of colored pencils along with it to do a proper coloring job. A half sheet of computer/printer paper fits perfectly and you can store them inside the "drawer" or in the top under the "frame." She has played with this more than I imagined she would-- she absolutely loves it!!!! It's sturdy and well-made, and I recommend it for sure.
