About this item

  • USES 48V PHANTOM POWER: Professional dynamic mic preamplifier activator that uses 48V phantom power to add 25dB of clean gain to dynamic and ribbon microphones while dropping the noise floor to an astonishing -70dB. (Note: phantom power is required and must be supplied by your audio interface or an external 48v power supply. The MB-1 does not supply phantom power).
  • MIC PREAMP FOR STUDIO AND BROADCAST RECORDING: Boost the signal of quiet instrument sources like vocals, percussion or acoustic instruments, while maintaining the natural sound of your microphone. (Not meant to be used with condenser mics)

Coda Music MB-1 Microphone Preamp Booster Activator for Livestream, Broadcast, Podcast.

If you record podcasts or live stream then you know how difficult it can be to get a strong signal without a bunch of noise. Especially when you’re recording at home. Professional recording studios don’t have this problem because they use expensive microphone preamps to amplify the signal.

With the Coda MB-1 you can get this same clean gain boost and audio quality at home. The MB-1 is a professional grade vocal microphone preamp booster that adds 25dB of clean & quiet gain to your microphone. The noise is rated at an astonishing -70dB. This all gives you substantially more gain without all of the hiss and hums

The MB-1 operates on 48V phantom power, but that power doesn’t pass through the microphones. That means it's 100% safe on sensitive ribbon mics. It's also a natural pairing with dynamic microphones like the Shure SM58.

Perfect to use for:

  • Podcasts and live streaming
  • Live performances
  • Radio broadcasts
  • Home studio recording

You get a massive frequency response of 25Hz-20kHz that clearly picks up the nuance in your voice. The MB-1 uses the highest quality discrete JFET circuitry and houses it in a solid aluminum enclosure. You can feel good knowing you can throw this in a bag and travel with it.

Whether you’re a hobbyist or a professional, the MB-1 professional microphone preamp booster will make sure your audience hears you the way you ought to be heard: clearly.

Features:

  • 25dB of Clean Gain Boost
  • Dynamic Frequency Response of 20Hz-20kHz
  • Quiet Noise Rating of -70dB
  • Input Impedance: 1.5kΩ
  • Rugged Aluminum Housing

Simple to use and works great with my mixer. I like how simple the device is and how professional it looks.

I wanted a little extra gain on my Shure MV7X when recording some gameplay through my PC and this fit the bill perfectly. Reasonably priced and the product quality feels really solid. Performance and sound quality is solid and don’t notice any glaring deficiencies. This beats paying for the more popular and expensive option.

Bought this instead of the Cloud Lifter. You get what you pay for, as this unit did not perform to my satisfaction. I found that the unit will amplify the vocal sound, but my voice was muffled on the backend. I ended up sending it back as I wasn't happy at all. I went out and bought the Cloud Lifter. More expensive but works and sounds great! Don't cheap out on your vocals. Buy the Cloud Lifter.

(I bought both the MB-1 and the MB-Stealth. The core of this review will be the same for both)I was looking to make an SM-48S hotter. I tripped over this, and - went for it.This box is durable enough for stage use. It's inline, you'll need another XLR cord. This *DOES* use phantom power, so if your mixer/preamp doesn't provide that, you'll have an issue. When unpowered, it's a straight pass-through.*for me* this is prefect. It's on a mic used for handpan and gong. I don't need shimmering high ends, I *do* need the bottom end not rolled off.Very nice box, I figure that the electronics are the same in the MB-Stealth, I didn't open this, as I'm returning it. I only need one, and I'll be keeping the -Stealth.Highly recommended. It does what it sets out to, and at this price point, you probably need more than one, just to keep around. :)

The MB-1 does a great job of boosting the output of my Sennheiser MD-441 and E935 microphones for use with my Bose S1 portable PA system. Previously the output of the MD-441 was so low that I had to run the gain on the amp up to 100% and the sound was muddy; now I am running at 40% and the clarity is superb. There is no added signal noise that I can detect when using the preamp. The MB-1 is ruggedly built, housed in a black anodized aluminum case. Now for the critique: The MB-1 could be much smaller than it is. I can't fit it sideways into the storage compartment in my guitar case, given it's 5.5 inch (14 cm) length. This is not a deal breaker, but I like not having to lug extra carrying cases for my gear and space is at a premium. As can be seen in the photo, I am having to use an added external phantom power supply to supply power to the MB-1, in this case an Xvive P1. Yes, I could use their smaller inline version, but it would be somewhat awkward with a long mic like the 441.My question: Why doesn't anybody make a portable microphone preamp that is self-contained with an internal rechargeable battery AND a volume control? Better yet, how about making one that can be used standalone for either condenser (phantom power) or dynamic microphones (FET preamp) and is small enough to easily tuck into the storage compartment of a guitar case? That way, regardless of the microphone type in my kit, it would be good to go. Also, it would be nice if there was an easy way to secure the MB-1 to a microphone stand so that I could do a quick parking lot or offstage setup and just walk up with my gear ready to go. I also would appreciate a gain control on the preamp unit itself so that if I need to tweak things during a performance it would be right there on the mic stand. Many of the venues that I play don't have a sound tech and having to move over to the PA head to adjust things is bothersome.Overall, the MB-1 is good for what it is, a low noise, phantom powered microphone preamp, but it is a bit large and more friendly for stationary or pedal board mounted use.

Since the Cloudlifter wasn't available on prime shipping and was nearly double the price I decided to give this microphone activator a try.Man I'm impressed, at half the price it works just perfectly with my Shure SM7B & Minifuse 1 interface.I haven't personally tried the Cloudlifter but there's tones of YouTube videos online showing the differences between this one and that one, and the difference is so minimal it's hard to justify the extra cost.Overall I'm very happy with this activator.

I ordered this microphone booster to get the best performance out of a new Shure SM7B mic recently ordered and I haven't been disappointed. The vocal sound is very clear and full and the vocal activity is quite easy with the use of this cloud lifter. Personal CD recordings have provided very good results.

Plugged my SM7B into this with a 6 foot cord and a 25 footer to my Presonus interface which supplied the 48Vdc and what a difference. I was using a Behringer Ultragain Pro, which gave me a nice warm sound but this makes it crystal clear and nice clean gain. Also plugged in my SM58 and wow what a difference. Not sure what happens to the Behringer now....That being said, I haven't tried the Cloudlifter, but at twice the price I would find it hard to believe it's twice as good.

I was using a USB mic and decided to upgrade to an xlr. Opted for the shure SM58 with a steinburg UR12 interface for my hobbies. However, quickly I realized the sound quality was not all that great when I boosted the mic on the interface. The noise floor with my interface could be heard.... but any recorded vocals weren't much louder than that. So if I did any noise reduction. It muffled. I tried to fix it with EQ, but it became more work than necessary and wasn't perfect. After some research found this. It pretty much fixed most of my audio headaches. No need to spend double or triple on a cloudlifter. This does the job fine. Voice is clear and that is all I need.

I had bought this as I needed one for a second mic, the cloud lifter was out of stock, so I came across this and decided to give it a try.I find that the cloud lifter is a bit clearer with higher levels, it doesn't clip as fast. This basically becomes distorted when the mic clips and it's more finicky than the cloud lifter.I don't think the extra $100-140 the cloud lifter costs is worth putting into it, if I were buying again I would still buy this one, I would have actually bought 2 of them vs spending the extra.Bottom Line, the sound quality on the cloud lifter is a smidge better but not for the extra money, keep the volume of the Mic at a reasonable level so it doesn't clip and you will never have an issue.

Works as advertised. It's a simple plug-and-play, and the output from the mic is instantly raised. Just make sure you adjust the rest of your settings in plug-ins etc where you might hav ebumped up the gain. It's a nice clean sound, GREAT value and good price.
