The motorola two-way radios are a great alternative to using cell phones when your cellular coverage is spotty or non-existant and also preserves your phone's battery life for other uses. The radios are pretty straight forward (no moving parts), not overly complicated to use and is convenient to clip on and carry. However, although advertised with a range of up to 25 miles, the actual range is largely dependent on the terrain, weather and other conditions so your mileage may vary.

If you understand in advance that FRS two-way radios like this Motorola T275 (with a max transmission power of 2 watts) have a very limited range outside of ideal, line-of-sight conditions, you'll be able to appreciate this product. People who are city or suburbia dwellers like me, are likely to be very disappointed if they expect to get a 25-mile talk range from these radios. From the information I've seen, 2-watt radio transmissions can only really travel that max distance in situations like this: when you're transmitting and receiving from 2 hot air balloons in direct line of sight of each other on a clear day. Other than that scenario, expect to get much less range. It's also good to remember that FRS radio communications are not private regardless of your "privacy code" settings (which are a bit of a misnomer). Other radios on the same channel as the one you select might pick up your conversations. So if being able to have truly private radio communications is important to you, FRS radios are not the right option for your needs. If you do decide to try them, at least be sure to change the channel settings from the default.I've used Motorola cell phones in the past, and I've always appreciated their call clarity. Likewise I was really pleased with how clearly I could hear the other party on these radios. These are actually less fussy to use than a cell phone for short-distance communications, such as biking, walking around a farmer's market, etc. The Call Tone button feature also makes it a good, quick paging system when, for example, my mom wants my dad to comes downstairs, or to come back inside from the backyard or from nearby the home. I'm still learning about all the features and potential uses, but in the short period of time I've been using the T275 two-way radios, I've been really impressed. Overall, I think this is an amazing starter pack for anyone interested in learning about and using license-free two-way radios. You get a great carrying case, a charging cable that can charge both radios at the same time, earpieces with mics, and stickers (to help differentiate radios).

I've had several sets of walkie talkies, and I have a another set of Motorola walkie talkies that are a couple years old. All of these things are pretty similar. The range is always unimpressive in real world situations. First thing to remember, the 25 mile claimed range that stands out in our mind for this product is a best case scenario, which they describe as "mountain to valley up to 25 miles". "Open water up to 6 miles". "Neighborhood up to 1 mile". I generally always use mine for fishing. A bunch of friends, in separate boats, over a potentially large area. The best open water range is strictly a line of sight range. If there is an island or any kind of land between you and your friends, the range is greatly reduced. That is the case with all of these FRS license free two-way radios. In order to be "license free", their power is limited. Truly impressive range is only achieved with much more high power radios, which require a license. Besides all that, talking about these specific radios, they are pretty nice, they are very compact, and they work as well as can be expected. The case is very nice, and it has several accessories, which may or may not be needed, but it's nice to have. Something important to realize is that this particular product is not waterproof, or even water resistant. If there's any risk of these getting wet, they could easily be ruined. Be careful with that. The two earpieces are basic, but functional. The part that goes around your ear is pretty uncomfortable, but it does work. The biggest problem I have is the fact that all of the buttons are black on a black background. They are very hard to read. If you look at many other similar products, many of them have buttons with white or some other color that stands out, making them much easier to interpret and use. That's the biggest issue by far. Everything else is somewhere between really nice, and okay. For the price, I would probably look for something that's at least water resistant with more legible buttons. Those products are out there, and Motorola actually makes a few of them. Last thing you want to do is spend $100, and then have it be completely ruined if it gets rained on a little. I gave it four stars. I hope this has been helpful.

These FRS radios works as well as you would expect from a solid radio communications company such as Motorola. There are some nice features built in as well a carrying case to keep everything organized and together. The biggest problem I've had with small Motorola FRS radios is in the past is that you always had to remove the belt clip to replace/recharge the batteries. The larger radios would have a charging stand, but it was always bulky to travel with. These will charge through USB...though only MicroUSB instead of USB C (big negative to have to carry another cable while traveling, but better than a charger system). Otherwise, the radios have all the standard features you would expect from Motorola FRS radios. All the channel and sub channel support, hands free mic and earpiece (included), as well as Ni-mh battery packs for both radios. The carrying case, it great for keeping everything together...but the camo design might actually make it easier to get lost when you're camping in the woods...LOL. I think a bright orange would be more useful for keeping track of.Overall, it's a nice set of radios. Always keep in mind that even though it's advertised as 25 miles...that's probably across a desert valley that has no trees or other obstructions. YMMV depending on your distance. If you're climbing around a rocky canyon with lots of trees, expect a few hundred feet.
