Device is well made and just works, out of the box (need your own 2xAAA batteries). It comes with calibration slides which are layers of clear acrylic, each numbered from 2mm, 1mm, 0.5mm, .25mm. 0.1mm and .05mm. You can layer them up to make many different thicknesses to test against the included piece of thin steel. There is a way to calibrate it if it were off, but wasn't off by enough for me to care, so I didn't bother. It registered a .027, when I was testing with actual .025, for example. I could have calibrated this out, but didn't bother. Not perfect, but way more than perfect enough to test car paint thickness when looking for previous undocumented body work. Why spend more?

I measured each panel of my car at least 5 times per panel and got 5 completely different readings. There is no way to get an accurate measurement. In addition, the instructions are typical Chinese product instructions. Useless!. I had to go on YouTube to learn how to calibrate it. I did it perfectly, 3 times, but still got different readings per panel.

This coating thickness gauge came well equipped with a series of slides of different thicknesses to allow you to test and setup the tools calibration.Once setup the tool is easy to use and allows for quick single measurements, as well as collecting multiple readings to average.I am a car hobbyist, and from time to time need to inspect a car that I may wish to purchase. Having this gauge will help me identify if a car has had areas that are repainted – or areas built up by body filler.I also show some of our cars and frequently have need to make paint corrections, so having the ability to measure paint thickness is very helpful to ensure I don’t remove too much paint.I have tested the tool on aluminium body cars, and it works well. (we don’t have any steel body cars, and the tool isn’t suitable for our fiberglass bodied cars).My only minor criticism was that I do find that using the tool in bright outdoor lighting it can sometimes be a little hard to read, but changing the angle the sun hits the display seems to help.Overall verdict?Great tool, accurate, feels durable, tremendous value for money. I will be showing this to all the guys in my car club, at this price I think they should all have one in their tool box.I highly recommend this product.
