Your cart is empty.Plug Spawn - Great for first time mushroom log growers. They are usually used for small projects of 1-10 logs, though some log cultivators will use them for larger projects. Inoculation: Works best with the Log Method. It will take at least 12 months of colonization before producing mushrooms and tends to fruit throughout the summer to fall growing season and after rainfalls. Preferred wood species are oak, maple, or beech. Difficulty: Beginner Shiitake is a great mushroom for beginners. They colonize quickly and are the most reliable producers of any species. Great for commercial cultivation! Cooking: Shiitake has a meaty texture when cooked and is good for drying and reconstituting in winter soups. It pairs beautifully with tamari, ginger, and garlic and can bring needed umami to many different dishes.

had to keep bags in fridge a couple month longer then expected.. still the dowels inoculated the logs well and looks like its about to start fruiting. Second time i have ordered these and will do so again. It easily pays for itself in fresh shitakes. Note if you have too many mushrooms slice thin and put in a dehydrator for like 12 hours to make them shelf stable in a jar for years. If you want to force the innoculated logs to fruit then soak them in water a couple days and they will assuming its not freezing out.

This is just what I ordered. It came with a guaranty and terrific instructions, as well as information on the other products the company makes. On top of that, the price is reasonable and it even arrived before I expected it to. While I have to wait a while to see how soon I get mushrooms the fact that they stand behind their work makes me feel good.

Received our order in March 2024 and placed our spawn plugs (shiitake, Italian oyster, snow, oyster, and lions mane) into the logs the following month. The order came with an instruction booklet which explained the best time of year to “plant” and what type of trees work best for each mushroom. Unfortunately, we had misidentified the tree we harvested for our logs and it was the one tree not listed. I didn’t want to cut down another tree so we used the serviceberry and hoped for the best. It is now early November 2024 and our shiitakes are blooming and we’ve even seen a few oyster mushrooms too. No growth on the lions mane but that may be due to us using a serviceberry for our logs. Needless to say, I am very happy with this purchase and I will definitely be using North Spore again.
