I have not had a chance to use this on a car yet but playing with it in the shop it seems good. The kit comes with several plastic chips that you can use for calibrating the machine and a nice pouch. If you are thinking about buying a used car you should take this with you.

This thickness meter feels high quality and is easy to use and calibrate. The included instructions are well-written and easy to follow. I can see how this meter would be useful for identifying body fillers when buying a used car. But I didn’t get it for that purpose. I do my own auto body repairs and some restorations. I got this meter to help estimate how much I can sand before reaching bare metal. Also, for the panels I spray, I can measure after spraying the base coat, and then again after the clear coat. This gives me reference points for gauging how much clear coat I have to work with if I have to do repairs in the future. I use the same 2-stage/2k coatings on all my work. I always spray 2 coats of base coat, followed by 2 clear coats. I’m hoping a single set of numbers is all I’ll need for everything I do.I tested this meter on my cars. It worked as described in the instructions. I don’t have a feel for the magnitude of the numbers yet, but the relative values of the measurements seem to make sense. Overall, I really like this meter. It’s a nice tool to have if you’re in the market for a used car, or if you do your own auto body work.

I was very impressed with this Benetech paint thickness gauge right out of the box. It includes a number of standards used in the calibration of the unit to both confirm and recalibrate, instructions for operation, a storage case for when not in use, batteries, a tether and of course the unit itself. I had been looking for a thickness gauge for some time as I often purchased used vehicles and also do some detailing on the side. This instrument allows you to measure the paint thickness which will give an indication of whether or not a vehicle has been resprayed or has had repairs in the past to bodywork. This instrument also comes in very handy when detailing vehicles, particularly when you are cut polishing to determine how much paint (primarily clearcoat) is on the steel which will dictate how much you can cut.Overall, I have found this paint thickness gauge from Benetech very easy to use and comes with everything needed in the box to get started. I would highly suggest this to anyone purchasing used vehicles or detailing.

As a bit of a gearhead who frequently buys and sells used cars and car parts, I’ve always wanted to own one of these gauges. The BENETECH paint thickness gauge is a great little tool for verifying if any vehicle panel has been painted, had body-filler added, or otherwise repaired in any way. This gauge can help sellers demonstrate that their vehicle or part is in good original condition, and likewise it can help buyers verify the condition or story of what they’re purchasing.I recently had some minor bodywork done on my BMW involving respray of a wheel and front fender, so it was my first test subject. The driver side unpainted original fender was about 0.120 mm, whereas the passenger side one which was painted gave a reading of 0.350 mm. Same thing for my wheels – An original wheel had a reading of about 0.145 mm, whereas the painted one was consistently over 0.325 mm. Both repairs were exceptionally well done and you wouldn’t know anything happened to the vehicle unless I told you, but science / this device reveals all!The kit comes with a set of slides that each have various thicknesses. These are used to re-calibrate the gauge if needed, although I found mind to be very accurate right out of the box. The instructions are written in clear English and very easy to understand. The storage pouch is a nice touch as well, and helps protect your investment. Even if you’re not an automobile enthusiast, this is a must have tool for anyone looking to purchase a used vehicle. Fantastic tool, seriously.
