HONESTLY, THIS IS THE BEST TRUMPET MUTE EVER!!! It is such a perfect fit in the bell of my Martin Committee! It's still great for my other trumpets, but it just sticks out more (pretty much like every other mute out there) except this thing feels WEIGHTLESS and sounds AMAZING!If you work at Protec and read this message... PROTEC, PLEASE MAKE A TROMBONE MUTE LIKE THIS ONE! For that matter, please ALSO make a FLUGELHORN MUTE LIKE THIS ONE! I really feel like throwing all of my other trumpet mutes in the trash because they now feel so heavy! This lightweight carbon fiber mute feels so light and sounds so perfect that it has ruined all of my other trumpet mutes for me. Protec, thanks for making this awesome trumpet mute! Again, please make them for more brass instruments ASAP. Thanks!

Like many trumpet players, I have been using the same mutes for many years, including my current straight mute. It's only my third one since, like, middle school! But it's getting pretty beat up, and so I've decided to retire it and pick up a new one.I spotted this unique carbon fiber design by Protec, which really got my attention because I was already a fan of their Liberty mutes - and of course their cases. I guess I've used Pro Tec products most of my adult life as a trumpet player. But this carbon fiber mute was something interesting, and I decided to give it a shot. Shipping was quick and before long it was at my doorstep. After a quick warm up, I was anxious to try it. I went with the excerpts from Scheherezade II and III, first with my aging H&B 'Symphonic' straight mute, and then with the new Pro Tec MC100.First impressions of the Protec are that the sound is light, crisp and clean. It definitely sounds lighter than the H&B. I also tested the Protec on a mixture of pop tunes and orchestral excerpts from the likes of Ellington, Connick and Debussy. This mute brightens when you really push the volume but the clarity doesn't break up. This MC100 responds quickly and speaks clearly even in the lower register. Intonation is good from low to high. The blow is easy, and the tone is consistent. It sounds good at higher volumes, too.The carbon fiber mute looks nice under the light, and has a lovely sheen. On closer inspection, obvious care is taken during production. The rubber grips (aren't we all usually guilty of referring to these generically as "corks"?) appear to be high quality. They certainly grip securely inside the bell. The Pro Tec is lighter in weight, but still feels substantial. This carbon fiber model is a serious straight mute and I have confidence it will serve me well for many years. The straight mute is usually the first one required for learners, and students will find out quickly that it gets used a lot in orchestra, pops, wind ensembles, big band and small ensembles. The Protec MC100 is appropriate for use at any level of development, but it sure sounds good and will appeal to serious players.

I bought this mute (three of them, actually, one for my wife, one for me, and one for a spare) We often need to use mutes with different sound characteristics, and for years have used primarily Tom Crown Straight mutes, and the TrumCor fibre straight mute for our orchestra and brass band playing. I like the sound of the Protec. It's a very nice, neutral sound, and is quite uniform over the full range of the C trumpet (which at this point is the only kind of trumpet we've used it on. It was intended to be one of my wife's Xmas presents this year, but we ended up using it for our two Nutcracker productions this year.). It doesn't affect the intonation appreciably, either, which is a blessing. The thin carbon fiber construction is robust, and yet unlikely to damage the bells of our horns. Two thumbs up!
