Dials poorly marked.I run them below half on the invisible dial marker!Cable is too short, another half foot would be perfect!Sounds good, well above 70db comes back clean, like the extra XLR.Phantom?Reluctant to trust a +48 line to a 9V drycell! Battery gobbler or invisible markings gave this product a deduction of one point! It works well for the price.

This thing drains the battery really fast, even if you never use the 48v phantom power - so stock up on some 9v batteries. I don't think it has a low battery indicator either so keep your eye on the sound levels so you don't keep recording something important without sound. That said, it's a pretty good device and does a pretty good job. There is definitely still a significant amount of noise, but less than with just the mic + usually terrible camera preamp. Very versatile as well.

I have done extensive testing with this unit. Right away, this unit is a very solid piece of kit. I use it as an interface with my Nikon D500 and my iPhone 8 and it works quite well. There are a few things I’d like to see improved about this product but I’ll start with the positives. The Build: The case is all plastic but a relatively high and rugged grade of plastic like nylon perhaps. I still wouldn’t want to drop it 10 feet to a concrete floor but it doesn’t feel flimsy tome by any means. The build quality also overall feels solid with no rattling or shaking inside and a respectable weight (firm but not like 10 pounds or anything). The XLR/TRS combi jacks and MTRS jacks on the front are very solid. They keep the attached cable connectors in the sockets very firmly… so much so that you have to give them a good tug to get them out (I like it that way, no unintentional disconnects during use on-location). The switches and pots for gain control are quite solid and take a good amount of force to move. The attached TTRS cable to go into your phone or camera is not the worst quality I’ve seen. Though being a 3.5mm connector, it is inherently fragile so be mindful of that not to bend it around or step on it too much. Also as a general note, NEVER wrap the cable around the unit for storage. ALWAYS use the included cable tie.The Features: The preamps in these I found do impart a slight boost in the high-midrange so they are not completely transparent. They are quite low-noise though, even when using lower output dynamic microphones. It has a hard time driving the Shure SM7B or Coles 4038 Ribbon mic… but most economical preamps do. For these kinds of mics you should invest in a phantom power mic activator to use them with this preamp. There is a very clear set of power indicators for both regular mode and 48-volt phantom mode which is nice. It’s very easy to tell which mode the unit is in. The ability to switch seamlessly between smartphone TTRS wiring and camera TRS wiring is great. Also the switch to sum the two preamps into both output channels (mono mode) or send channel one to left and two to right really makes this unit flexible. Also a point of note… if you’re careful with your gain staging… you CAN plug line-level sources (mixers, CD players, audio interfaces) into these ports thus enabling you to connect those devices to your phone. Again, these are mic pres and are expecting a low mic-level signal… be careful with this as it is easy to clip if you don’t set your levels properly.Improvements: On the next unit I’d like to see a few things… first and foremost is the ability to use a 9V DC adapter to power the unit. As it stands you can only power the unit using standard PP3 9V batteries. While these batteries are common they are not particularly cheap. The typical 9V has a capacity of around 500 mAh. This unit in NON-phantom mode consumes between 15 and 16 mA loaded with 2 dynamic mics. This means you can expect about 33 hours of run time out of it… not bad. In 48V mode loaded with one condenser mic it uses around 60 mA and with two condensers about 80-90 mA. This means you can only expect about 6 hours if you use this in phantom power mode a lot. That’s fine if it’s an occasional-use item. But if you’re using it everyday for streaming or recording social media content on your phone… this can get costly rather quick. So adding a 9V barrel jack on the body would be a nice touch. Or stepping it up from a micro-USB 5V input so you can power it with a battery bank.Next, I would like to see clipping indicators. I understand that level meters or indicators add to the power footprint of the unit as well as taking up space on the unit with extra LEDs. Though I think installing a preamp clipping indicator LED under the channel ‘1’ and ‘2’ labels would be a great compromise. Most cameras have level indicators on the monitor itself but in the case of smartphone use, many apps (such as the iPhone camera app) don’t have indicators so you can’t really tell what your input level looks like. Finally, I would like a bit more flexibility with the headphone output on the unit. As it is.. in TTRS mode (for phones) the unit takes the feed for the onboard headphone port from the output of the phone. This is great for video calls or other two-way situations. Then if you switch to TRS mode (for cameras), the unit switches to taking the monitor feed directly from the mic pres themselves. Ultimately acting as a direct signal monitor. It would be nice if there was a way (in the case of TTRS operation) to either set it to monitor the direct pre feed OR the signal return from the phone’s output… or even optimally to have a control to blend the two to your liking. In the situation of a social media livestream for example… the unit needs to be set in TTRS mode but at the same time it would be nice to be able to monitor your sound as none of the livestreaming apps offer that in the app so you’re shooting in the dark as far as your balance and level is concerned. The only workaround I could find is to set the level in camera mode initially and then once you’re in the sweet spot, switch it back to smartphone mode to do the stream or record the video. It would be nice if there was a switch to change the monitor source. However, for the price, considering these are the only 3 main points I could find problematic with it… that’s pretty hard to beat. As a career audio professional, I highly recommend this unit overall.

Astonishingly Good. This rather new product fills a great niche. The weak link in making good quality smartphone and old-school videos has long been audio. This device allows up to 4 inputs into a quality 2-channel pre-amp WITH 48 volt phantom power. This permits the use of 1 or 2 high-quality XLR microphones and/or 1 or 2 1/4" instruments in along with 1 or 2 1/8' lavalier condenser mics. The output to a TRRS 1/8" plug allows direct connection to a modern smartphone. Bingo! Excellent audio for video or audio in the most mobile, light economical setup. Easy to set up and use, outstanding results.SARAMONIC! If you review this I would LOVE to have a simple accessory: a 1/8" TRRS female to 1/4" mono male adapter. With this, I could use the SmartRig+ as a portable mixer and jack directly into a single amplifier. Please make one. I will gladly be a Beta Tester!

The magic tool for camera audio. Light, great value and simple to use. As a long overdue product providing 4 inputs, 2 phantom powered , this device solves the connectivity problems for the videographer in a simple effective solution. No volume control on the headphone out connection, though the level seems adequate for monitoring. I've done several music gigs with it and can recommend using it. The volume controllers need a spot of white paint on them to mark the levels as you can't see them in the dark.
