We travel a lot, sometimes for a month at a time, sometimes for much shorter periods. When we are on the road, we rely on friends and neighbours to look after our place and water our plants. Realizing that the job of watering is something of an imposition, we like to use watering aides such as these terra cotta watering spikes; it’s nice to know that you can take off for a week without having to make plans for someone to babysit your big green babies while you are gone.The spikes arrived well packaged in styrofoam. They are quite large (about 7” in length) and nicely crafted; we didn’t find a single flaw in any of them. In preparation for their use, we will usually soak a spike in water for an hour or two so that it will start to release water to the soil almost immediately. To avoid spills and make inserting the spikes easier, we pre dig the hole it will go in.Suitable for use indoors or out, using the spikes is fairly straight forward; for shorter periods of time (a couple of days), we simply insert the spikes into the ground and fill them with water. For longer periods, we use the a recycled plastic 750 ml or 1l bottle with a long neck. We fill the container with water, place the stake over the spout, carefully turn it over so the water fills the spike and then carefully place it in the pre dug hole in the pot or ground. With grandchildren around, we avoid the use of glass bottles; this reduces any risk of broken glass while also avoiding the problem of the assembly becoming too top heavy.We don’t normally have much intense heat where we live, there are usually only a handful of 30°C days per year. In these conditions, watering spikes work very well for keeping plants well hydrated; in controlled conditions, such as indoors, they are ideal. They are an easy way to take care of your plants when you are going to be away. Recommended.
