Viewers don't need to be familiar with all of Jane Austen's novels to enjoy the interactions of the characters and the events that unfold in this film. However, if you are familiar with Austen's plot lines and characters, you'll recognize some of the similarities between the novels and the screenplay, and appreciate the writer's and director's work even more.

This is a favorite movie of mine. Watch it when you're in a bad mood and you'll be smiling and feeling just a little bit better about the world by the time it's over. The movie is quiet, subtle, nuanced. No big emotional outbursts, no theatrics. It's a calm study of a group of people who are brought together by a common interest, and the events that spring from that. Not a lot happens, and that's okay. Watching it, you have a sense of spending time with these people, getting to know and understand them. And like them. By the end, characters have grown, lives have changed, and you feel enriched by it.The promotional material leads you to expect that each individual's life begins to mirror that of the character in the Austen book being read. That may be true, but it's very subtle and may easily slip by unnoticed. It's not necessary to have read Austen to enjoy the movie. And if the movie inspires viewers to read Austen, so much the better. The acting here is wonderful. Kathy Baker, in particular, is outstanding, but all of the actors seem pitch perfect. Is it a chick flick? Well, there are no explosions, no fiery infernos, no armed conflicts or space invasions or wars being waged. So I guess the answer is yes. And let's have some more like this one.

Other reviewers have outlined the Plot so I will just add my 2 cents. Great movie for Jane Austen lovers and the movie stands on its own merits. That being said, the more the viewer knows about Austen books, the more you will enjoy this movie. My husband and I watched it as our Lunchtime Movie of the Week the day it came and agreed we could happily watch it again. He is not as familiar with Austen as I am and he had no problem with the references to the books/characters. Characters in this movie are well drawn and we found them believable. Costuming and site selections good. Dialogue believable. Plot moves along nicely with enough twists that I could not predict the ending, which was really nice for me. (I often can predict the ending from the foreshadowing even before the climax arrives.) For the most part, the outcomes work, as does the ending. We rooted for some of the couples to wind up together more than others. Not sure if that was personal preference or a good script writer.

This is a cute "chick flick". It's something to put on and enjoy while folding the laundry in the afternoon, or while curled up on the sofa, with a dish of ice cream, on Saturday night. I've watched it several times and really enjoy it. Of course, it's not one my husband ever wanted to sit down and watch with me (you say the words "Jane Austen" and he immediately has a million other things to do). But it's one I can enjoy by myself time and time again.I love Jane Austen's books and have seen most of the movies made from them, so this was fun because it focuses on the Jane Austen novels, even though it's not a movie of one of her books. There are some funny parts and the dialog is good. Plus, I love all the references to Jane Austen and her beloved characters. There are some really good actors here as well. I have always liked Amy Brenneman. Kathy Baker does a great job as does Maria Bello. I enjoyed Emily Blunt as well. And Hugh Dancy is just cute!I tried to read the book this movie is based on, but couldn't get into it (I gave up after a couple of chapters). Odd, because I usually enjoy the book better than the movie, but in this instance I found the book to be too dry and detailed and didn't get to the cute "chick flick" part that I enjoy so much about the movie. This is a cute movie and a really good price. Probably can't find it for a better price than Amazon.
