The mounting collar that goes through the firebox seemed to be bent or something. The thermocouple wouldn't go through it all the way. I had to use a drill to open it up some. After getting it back together it seems that the thermo tip is a little short. I had to force it all the way into the sleeve so it would have a half inch of flame. It seems to work, but I kept the old one just in case.

...make sure you understand all the precautions of working with gas, or propane. Double-check for post installation leaks, using a soapy water mixture (look for bubbles for bubbles forming to indicate leaks).

Your Gas water heater is not working right? In my case the pilot could be lit and then valved on, and the burner would stay lit about 10 minutes or less, until the water got warm, and the temp control shut off the burner, but the pilot would go out also. This indicates the thermo-couple, because that is what is required to keep the pilot lit. If the pilot isn't lit, the burner can't relight. What's likely going on is the thermo-couple is making contact while it's cold, but once it heats up, the 2 different metals separate (copper line to the control valve, and whatever the metal is at the end where it pokes into the flame, and so you don't have the proof of flame once the metals separate. (Confused yet? Sorry...I tried to explain, and it made perfect sense to me when I was writing it - hehe). So anyways... you likely have a bad thermo-couple, which is a relatively inexpensive fix which you are fully capable of doing yourself (unless you're technically declined, which is just a fixable mental block...right? If you can't do it, then go pay $150-$200 to have someone else do it).So...when you pull your burner assembly, which has the thermo-couple (and the pilot tube, the larger burner tube, and the piezo-electric ignitor), you may notice that the thermo-couple has what looks like a fuse link. What that actually is is a thermal-fuse...it's designed to melt if an uncontrolled fire is started under your water heater (as opposed to the controlled burner flame). When the thermal-fuse melts, it opens the circuit and causes the controller to cut off the gas.The funny thing is AO Smith replacement thermo-couples don't even come with the thermal fuse!!! But you don't really need the thermal link, and this generic thermo-couple will work just fine for your water heater (as long as it's the correct length). So measure the length of your bad one and make sure. Because the longer they are, the higher the resistance, and your gas control valve is designed for the correct length. Finally, if you feel you just gotta have the thermal fuse (cause your'e afraid you just can't keep the area clean under your water heater...and dust or debris collecting under your water heater, may start an un-controlled fire), then for about $20 more, you can get the complete kit which includes the thermo-couple (with thermal-fuse link), the pilot tube, and a piezo-electric ignitor. The AO Smith and Clark-Reliance are the same part, only if you buy the AO Smith, you'll pay about $20-$30 more. In the case of my AO Smith gas water heater, the kit is titled "Reliance Water Heater #9003542 Nat Gas Pilot Assembly" for about $32, whereas the same part labelled as "9003542005 A O Smith Water Heater FV Pilot 190 Degree C Natural" is $62. But they are functionally the same part, and either one will work.Or you could spend about $10 and use this generic thermo-couple. You decide.

great length (24 in), and application for many installations in the older furnaces and waterheaters ( live in a 30 year old mobile home park and use these to get my neighbors furnaces going again..
