Onion Elegance North of the Border: Walla Walla Seeds for Your Canadian Garden

Indoor Planting:

  • Gather Supplies: Ensure you have all necessary supplies: JNB's Walla Walla Onion Seeds, seed trays, a seed starting mix, a spray bottle, and a grow light.
  • Choose Seed Trays: Select seed trays with drainage holes to prevent waterlogging. Trays should be at least 5 cm deep, providing ample space for root development.
  • Fill Trays with Seed Starting Mix: Fill each tray with a quality seed starting mix, creating a uniform surface. Moisten the mix evenly using a spray bottle, maintaining a damp consistency.
  • Sow Walla Walla Onion Seeds: Sow JNB's Walla Walla Onion Seeds evenly on the moistened mix, spacing them about 2 cm apart. Gently press the seeds into the mix, ensuring good seed-to-soil contact.
  • Cover and Mist: Lightly cover the seeds with a thin layer of seed starting mix. Mist the surface with water to settle the seeds and maintain moisture.
  • Provide Warmth: Place the trays in a warm location, ideally maintaining a temperature between 18-24°C. Consider using a heat mat to enhance germination.
  • Introduce Grow Lights: Position the trays under a grow light, maintaining a distance of 5-10 cm above the seedlings. Provide 14-16 hours of light daily to simulate sunlight.
  • Watering and Monitoring: Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Use the spray bottle to water gently. Monitor seedlings for any signs of legginess, adjusting light distance accordingly.
  • Transplant Seedlings: When seedlings reach a height of 7-10 cm and have developed a robust root system, transplant them into larger pots or directly into your outdoor garden. Gradually acclimate them to outdoor conditions before transplanting to ensure a successful transition. Follow these detailed steps to nurture your JNB's Walla Walla Onion Seeds into robust seedlings, ready to flourish in your Canadian garden. Enjoy the journey of cultivating these flavorful onions from the comfort of your home!

Maple-Fueled Growth: Walla Walla Onion Seeds – Canada's Gardening Treasure!

Outdoor Planting:

  • Soil Preparation: Begin by preparing the soil in a well-drained, sunny location. Loosen the soil to a depth of approximately 15-20 cm (6-8 inches). Incorporate organic matter, such as compost or well-rotted manure, to enhance fertility. Aim for a slightly acidic to neutral soil pH between 6.0 and 7.0.
  • Seed Sowing Depth and Spacing: Plant JNB's Walla Walla onion seeds directly into the prepared soil at a depth of about 1 cm (0.4 inches). Space the seeds approximately 5 cm (2 inches) apart in rows with a distance of 30-45 cm (12-18 inches) between rows. Adequate spacing ensures optimal bulb development and facilitates proper air circulation.
  • Watering: Water the planted seeds thoroughly after sowing. Ensure the soil stays consistently moist, especially during the germination period. Once the seedlings emerge, gradually reduce watering frequency, allowing the soil to dry slightly between waterings. Onions prefer slightly drier conditions once established.
  • Mulching: Apply a layer of organic mulch, such as straw or shredded leaves, around the base of the Walla Walla onion plants. Mulching helps retain soil moisture, suppress weeds, and regulate soil temperature, promoting overall plant health. Maintain a mulch layer of approximately 5 cm (2 inches) thickness.
  • Thin Out Seedlings: When the Walla Walla onion seedlings reach a height of about 7.5-10 cm (3-4 inches), thin them out to ensure proper spacing. Leave the healthiest, strongest seedlings, spacing them at least 10-15 cm (4-6 inches) apart. Thinning encourages robust growth and bulb development.
  • Fertilization: Apply a balanced, all-purpose fertilizer when the Walla Walla onion plants are around 15 cm (6 inches) tall. Follow the recommended application rates on the fertilizer package. Avoid excessive nitrogen, as this can lead to excessive foliage growth at the expense of bulb development.
  • Weed Control: Regularly remove weeds around the Walla Walla onion plants to minimize competition for nutrients and water. Be diligent in maintaining weed-free zones within the planting area to support the healthy growth of the onions.
  • Harvesting: Harvest Walla Walla Onions when the bulbs have reached a desirable size, usually around 10-15 cm (4-6 inches) in diameter. Lift the bulbs carefully using a garden fork, allowing them to cure for a few days in a shaded, well-ventilated area. Once the outer layers are dry, trim the tops and store in a cool, dry place.
  • Seasonal Considerations: Recognize the seasonal nuances of outdoor cultivation in Canada. Plant Walla Walla onion seeds after the last frost, typically in late spring or early summer. Adjust planting times based on local climate conditions and ensure a growing season that aligns with the variety's requirements. By following these detailed steps, Canadian gardeners can successfully plant JNB's Walla Walla Onion seeds outdoors, fostering a robust and flavorful harvest.

The seedling, once they broke through the soil, were threadlike and most rotted off at soil level. Tried four plantings and only the last one produced shoots strong enough to transplant into the garden. ended up buying commercially raised shoots.
