Got one at work. Played with it for about 2 hours trying to calibrate it, doesn't seem like it's picking up the probe. Returning for refund. Chinese junk.

Tested the unit at work with accurate gauge blocks at different thickness and was very accurate , off by .003" on 6.000" thick is pretty good to me, also tried different material with same outcome

This tester was very easy to use. After calibrating the tester with the included sample, I tested a few items including a glass door and the device provided a measurement consistent with my calipers. The measurement was fast and it was easy to use the device and read the output. No complaints as it worked very well in my testing and was so easy to use.

I'll be honest, I'm used to manually measuring the thickness of various objects I'm working with, but when you don't have complete access to the full thickness of the object, ultrasonic technology helps. This kit gives you everything you need to get started. Inside the retail box is a hard case that keeps the device and accessories protected and organized. You get a small bottle of ultrasonic gel (if you run out, this is a very easy item to replace), a probe (with a very nice locking connector), instructions, and 3 x AAA NIMH rechargeable batteries. The display on this device is clear and backlit. You get several modes including memory banks to save data.An important feature of this device is the ability to select and define sound velocity values, which is crucial as different objects have different values that can affect measurement accuracy.Fortunately, you can also calibrate this device and here's a 4mm metal disk built into the front of the unit to help with that. It's important to note that since this an ultrasonic device, you must use the provided gel or you won't get a reading (at all). The gel is very easy to clean, so messes are not an issue. This device provides very fast measurements, and you can also set a high/low thickness limit if needed. This isn't so much to set a limit for what you can measure, but it's a useful feature to alert you when the thickness thresholds of the object you are measuring fall out of spec.So far, I have no complaints. There's no indication that this device can be interfaced with a PC, so I will assume that it can't be. This may be a deal-breaker if you require the data to be stored, retrieved, and exported to view on a computer or shared.

I was impressed with how relatively easy it is to use and get accurate readings. I've used other similar electronic non-destructive ultrasonic gauges in the past but compared to this, you needed to be a rocket scientist to make sense of them.First off, the display is large and easy to read. There is a lot of information that can be gleaned from it and there are also various calibration options for different materials. This means that the gauge is not limited to just one or two materials, it can be used on a dozen withy the option to set up three customized options. The point here is that by default its simple to use but can also be set up for more complex measurements by anyone who needs to go beyond what's offered by default.Like any instrument that uses ultrasonic' s to measure or penetrate surfaces, think of what is commonly called ultrasound examinations where the technician applies a layer of gel to the surface of the skin before proceeding, there is need for a gel to make complete contact with the transducer and material to be measured. Without this gel, it meter isn't capable of providing any measurement. The nice thing is that like medical gels, this cleans up easy, leaves no messy or oily residue, is non-toxic, and doesn't discolor painted surfaces.Set up and use:You don't need to be some sort of a technician to use this. The user manual does an ok job of explaining how the pieces get connected. Once a simple test calibration is performed by adding a dab of gel to the metal button located under the control/display panel will cause the meter to give a reading of this button's thickness. It is exactly 4mm and the display has shown this value every time I've used it. Once the calibration has been confirmed, a dab of gel is applied to the item I want to test and that's it.The transducer head is small, no bigger in diameter than a nickel, and about as long. The two cables that connect back to the meter use common connectors, by that I mean that there is no wrong way to plug them in. The cables can be switched around and the transducer still works.Accuracy:So far everything I've measured has shown accurately when compared to calipers and precision micrometers. I ran dozens of tests and at this point, I have every confidence that it will show accurate any time it's used. The fact that it is capable of showing thickness to 3 decimal points makes it more accurate than the micrometers I've used which are accurate to two decimal points. The meter runs on three AAA batteries and the kit includes NimH's. By connecting the meter to a USB port via any micro USB cable the batteries can be charged but I really appreciate that the rechargeables can be popped out, there's always going to be a point that requires battery power and rechargeables are dead and if they are alkalines can be inserted. To help preserve the batteries the default auto power-off is two minutes but this can be changed in the settings, from 2 minutes, 5, 10, 30, or never auto power off. Also to power, the device up the button needs to be held for three seconds which means its unlikely that the meter will be powered on unexpectedly.Because of the accuracy and ease of use combined with cost, this is a very good deal for anyone who needs to gauge materials, especially those where a micrometer is almost impossible to physically place and use.For the price, this is a great deal.
