Be careful, last picture shows that the product works on different surfaces, and this was the main reason for me to make a purchase. However, it seems that it works only on magnetic and non-magnetic surfaces, Disappointed.returning it back

The only thing which I was a little disappointed in, that they didn’t provide a little carry or protective case for it

At first, I thought the gadget would be difficult to use, but once I read the manual and was able to calibrate the thing, it was a breeze. I bought it because my new Tesla needed some paint repair in one small area and I wanted to be sure that when they fixed it, the lacquer thickness was intact. This tool allowed me to check that, and I am satisfied it confirmed the thickness was acceptable as I cross checked with other parts of the vehicle. However, it should be noted that the device only works on ferrous and aluminum substrates. Most bumpers, including Tesla are plastic so it’s not possible to crosscheck that. But that was not a dealbreaker.I’m satisfied with the product.

Doesn't auto-rotate. No setting to change. Inconsistent tests on calibration strips +/- 1%. But deal-breaker is the broken AUTO-ROTATE.

The first thing that stands out is the impressive screen. I think it's OLED. It's clear and colourful. The voice that reads out the readings is loud and clear and useful if you're measuring at an odd angle. Although the last reading does stay on the screen so it's not required it's good to know you got an actual reading. There's not much more to say as the unit does what it says. I used it to test the thickness of paint, and then compared it to the thickness of paint + PPF on my car. It was also interesting to see which parts were aluminum vs steel. Fe vs NFeIt would be nice if it came with some kind of protective case. For now I have it stored in the plastic bag it came with.

As someone who has never used a paint coating thickness gauge before I was a little intimidated when I first started using this device. The instructions are not especially well-written for a beginner and require you to know a decent amount already about these kind of gauges, but after doing a little bit of research and familiarizing myself with the terminology, this is actually a very simple tool to use.All you need to do is touch the sensor on the bottom to whatever you want to test, and almost instantly it will give you a very detailed reading about the paint, the thickness, its substrate type and more. I personally find it most useful for getting readings on the paint on my car, but it can be used in any number of ways. For example, you can figure out if a car has been painted over and that can help you to figure out if there's been problems in the past. The screen is easy to read, and the device will also read out the information to you automatically. I wasn’t able to figure out how to disable that feature, as it does get a little tiresome after a while, but it’s not a bad thing to have if you need it. But if you were in a situation where you didn't want to draw attention to yourself (like a car lot), it would be better to be able to turn it off.Once you’ve measured everything you need just plug it into your computer and you can review up to 1,500 readings easily, so you don’t need to worry about keeping track of the different readings you get.I think it could be more beginner-friendly, but if you're an expert, you'll find it works well and is easy to use. For beginners, be prepared to do some research.

The most common use for these things is to check paint thickness on car panels to attempt to detect when an undisclosed repair has been made. You do this by checking the average thickness of the coatings over the metal around the whole panel, and across different panels and see if there is some anomaly area somewhere that might need a closer look.Testing the accuracy of this gauge was extremely simple thanks to the fact that they include both ferrous and non ferrous target plates as well as a whole series of labeled plastic films of known thicknesses for use when calibrating. I didn't have to calibrate mine, it was very accurate right out of the box where the readings took both against the ferrous and non ferrous substrate targets matched the labeled thicknesses of the calibration sheets to about 1nm.Using it is also really easy, you just turn it on and press the sensor at the tip of the device against what you want to measure and it does everything else automatically including detecting the substrate type and pretty much gives you a reading instantaneously. The screen is more than large enough to read easily, I like how it's both colour, back lit and it shows a ton of information. It appears there is a mechanism built in for updating the firmware/software of the device, but I searched for a while and found the original manufacturer site for the device and was unable to locate anything - but it's nice to know that this capability exists in case there are problems that are found to require updates to fix in the future.Minor quibbles. A lot of people will probably count the fact that it has a built-in rechargeable battery as a plus but personally I would have preferred if it just took AA batteries for longevity sake. There is no storage case of any kind included to protect the gauge (and keep the calibration materials together with it, but the calibration sheets themselves are kept in a small plastic container which is good). For a not-so-cheap electronic tool like this, I wouldn't feel comfortable not storing it in a case. I had a small general purpose device/camera case kicking around and used that but I really do think it ought to have come with something.
