I setup my old WDLiveTV to connect a couple of hard rives to my computer network (setup Microsoft share). This 4k player doesn't have a way to set up a share. So I connected the hard drives (on a hub) to my router and then used VLC in the 4k player's apps. VLC saw the drives on the network and I could play movies from them. I was able to copy movies to the drives through my router. The 4k player has video codecs that the WDLiveTV didn't. Love it! and recommend it.

For the price, I was expecting a dedicated media player, like the WD Live. My media content is exclusively via LAN connected NAS storage. I cannot speak to using this with USB attached local storage. What I got was a (Android based?) terribly slow mini-PC (micro-controller?), with Android apps installed. The two media player apps are VLC and Kodi. Neither work correctly, and when trying to play a movie, there's no AC3 pass-through, and crashes the "player" all the time. Any media formats that this "media player" plays are a function of the app, not the player itself. The implementation of networking with Kodi just doesn't work. Avoid this player if you're relying on networked LAN content..

I was looking for a simple media player so that I could plug in a USB stick or memory card, select a language, subtitles and watch a downloaded movie. However, the device is complicated by a bunch of downloaded apps, does not automatically detect the inserted USB stick and takes a long time to set up. This may be good for advanced users, but not for an average pensioner like me.Some people will find the device great and full of useful apps... I just expressed my personal opinion

I'm sad I waited too long to properly test this because I missed my change to return it. First off I should have known it wasn't great when I first opened it and the player was very light and cheap feeling. The second thing you'll notice is how awful the remote it, how does it not have buttons for fast forward, rewind, play/pause, skip back/skip ahead? that should be standard on a media player remote. I watched a movie today, I have 4k rips that are 2160p, h264 & h265, basically what you would be using this for. This is also a player that does not like MacOSX formatted drives (like most) so I was forced to have my drive formatted in ExFat, which is very annoying. The video file did not play very well, there were pauses that would occur, slight ones that are just very annoying every time you notice it. I really wish the WD player was updated to play h265 and 4k because that player was elite and would also read Mac formatted drives. Now it seems to be all garbage out there, I don't know what the solution is. All I can suggest is that you make sure you can return any media players you purchase because it will be trial and error. Sadly I'm stuck with this paper weight, but I've learned my lesson.

I must say that I've looked around at posts and looked for many alternative products to eventually replace my WD Live Player but there haven't been any clear answers and I was very skeptical about trying something to connect my 4 - 10TB drives to with my downloaded movies, TV series, etc. I haven't fully explored this system yet, but did connect one of my drives to try it out and it worked quite well! I like the fact there are 4 USB ports and with one of them that can be connected to a wireless mouse for controlling, fast forwarding and pretty much any other function. The number of ports available to me was super important due to number of drives I have connected, but the wireless mouse is a bonus for sure. In addition to all this, one of the things I don't like is that there's no fast forward/rewind, zoom button on the remote compared to the WD Remote. While I'm still exploring this new Media Player and trying to learn about it's features, I'll revise my rating and review later if necessary. The interphase is definitely not as user friendly on this player but it does handle a 10tb with no issues. That was an initial concern as well but there doesn't seem to be any issue at all and while I might upgrade a couple of drives to 12TB, I don't think this will also be any problem either.
