Geomag FAQ:
-5c.What happens to my compass in the southern hemisphere? For a compass to work properly, the compass needle must be free to rotate and align with the magnetic field. The difference between compasses designed to work in the northern and southern hemispheres is simply the location of the "balance", a weight placed on the needle to ensure it remains in a horizontal plane and hence free to rotate. In the northern hemisphere, the magnetic field dips down into the Earth so the compass needle has a weight on the south end of the needle to keep the needle in the horizontal plane. In the southern hemisphere, the weight needs to be on the north end of the needle. If you did not change the weight, the needle would not rotate freely, and hence would not work properly.
Note: in order to make normal use of DQL-8 in the Southern Hemisphere. The geological compass copper circle on the North, rather than you see in the picture on the South.
Magnetic Declination:
Magnetic declination, sometimes called magnetic variation, is the angle between magnetic north and true north. Declination is considered positive east of true north and negative when west.

Made of aluminum, good paint finish, dial is anodized. Mirror is glass, as is the bezel. Laser engravings for the compass scales are very precise; as good as it gets. Needle is induction damped so it settles in about 3 seconds. Hinges use full brass pins, will last for generations. Levels were a teensy bit out of adjustment, but I was able to open/disassemble the compass easily, and calibrate (tweak) them to a high level of precision (Note: this requires an existing high precision machinists level on hand to make a very level work surface in order to calibrate the levels. Do NOT attempt to do that with an ordinary carpentry level).Declination can be set with included non-magnetic screw driver attached to the leatherette case.Inclinometer works very well, the vernier will read down to 5 minutes of arc, but you need a little magnifying glass to read the vernier precisely (true of the 'real version' also). The needle also feature luminous paint on both ends and also every 90 degrees on the compass dial. It can be balanced to compensate for local magnetic dip by moving the copper windings on the South end of the needle. Again, do this if you 'know what you're doing'.As noted, this is a direct reading compass primarily used for survey work to be used as a hand held survey transit (not really for navigation or orienteering) so it is NORMAL and expected that the East and West is reversed.Summary: Very good for value, 90% the quality of the real version for 5% of the price. Will probably last just as long while delivering 100% of the same accuracy. Find the users manual for the 'real version' of this transit compass to truly make proper use of it, rather than the included ones, which are poor (no surprise there).Highly recommended for its intended purpose.

Do you want to use a Brunton instead of the underacheiving Sylva? Want to take strike and dip with one hand? Can't afford that massive Brunton price tag? This one is for you.I've been using my compass for about 8 years now. It's pretty beat up, at this point, and the needle balance isn't great any more. I deal with this by tapping the lock button. The paint has chipped off, leaving it gun metal gray. The north arrow on mine is white (i.e., a southern hemisphere compass). But you know what?I would buy it again every time. For the price, I don't care if I drop it, lose it, or abuse it. I'm happy with the quirks to not have the responsibility of maintaining a $500+ compass when out doing dirty work in the field. If you are looking for a Faux Brunton - this is it.

I bought this compass in 2022 but the bezel has stopped rotating. Can this be repaired?
