A healthy vegetable at hand

The debate

There is a long-time debate about whether purslane a weed or a vegetable. Everyone has his own option. Let the debate continue. The fact speaks louder.

In China, purslane is consumed as a leafy vegetable throughout the country. This little plant could be found everywhere, in poor soil or good soil, wetland or dry-land, cold areas or hot areas. This resilient plant helps support a resilient country, in bad times or good times.

Proven by USDA

Data speaks even louder: Purslane is rich in Vitamin A, Vitamin C and Omega fatty acid. According to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), 100 grams of purslane contains 1320IU Vitamin A, 21mg Vitamin C and 0.39g of fat.

You may visit the USDA website for further information.

Ready in 60 days (in warm seasons)

There is no need to explain how easy it is to grow and how healthy it is to consume. The only question is: do I have enough space to grow it?

Germination Guide

  • Direct sow after the danger of frost.
  • Sprinkle seeds onto moist soil and press them in lightly. Don’t cover them, as they need light to germinate.
  • Seedlings take 10-15 days to sprout after planting.

Beyond Hundredfold : Nature in its full potential

Goldfinch on a sunflower

When restoring native plants to an area, beneficial insects, birds, and small mammals are welcomed back following the plants. For example, in North America, native oak trees support over 500 species of caterpillars, whereas ginkgos, a landscape tree from Asia, host only 5 caterpillars, according to American Ecologist Doug Tallamy.

As a result, healthy microbes (good bacteria and fungi) are restored as well. The presence of this biodiversity plays an important role in the health of the soils, which in turn enhances the air and the groundwater as the soils plays a crucial role in the carbon cycle. However, when biodiversity decreases, the soils, the air, and the groundwater are negatively affected. This not only causes enormous environmental threats but also direct hazards to human health. Our message can be more effectively communicated if the general public knows how close to home biodiversity loss can hit.

Seeing nature in its full potential is our best reward. Planting native plants is one step closer to restoring biodiversity. That is why we never get tired of spreading native seeds.

I couldn't believe my eyes when I found those seeds. My order arrived sooner than promised along with a gift. Very well packaged. No instructions on the packaging, but I found all the information I needed in the listing. The seeds took longer than usual to sprout, I almost gave up and started a new batch, they are also growing very slowly (I am comparing with back home where it's hot and sunny) but we didn't get enough sun and warmth in BC this year.Try cooking these with lentils as a stew (stems included), or add to salads (leaves only).I am very happy with this purchase, will definitely buy it again and recommend it to friends and family

I had the advantage of having tasted these in Montreal as well as in other countries. When grown well, these are indeed succulent and delicious. In Turkey and other parts of Middle East, these are used in gyros and donairs. However, the seeds I bought seem to be very slow and reluctant to grow. Out of the 500 or so, seeds I planted, only 5 grew to more than 4 inches, the rest are either struggling as seedlings or have decided to hunker down in the soil. I am going to try the rest under a white lamp. Forget grass, elderberry, dandelion and the other mistakes made by the early pioneers. Purslane is well worth the attempt if one can get it as ground cover: these make delectable healthy dishes.

All's well so far. Will update if seeds fail or succeed. Otherwise, quite happy with purchase.
